GOVE-BORN Nathan Djerrkura is “one good game away” from making his AFL debut with Geelong, the Cat’s football manager Neil Balme said yesterday.
Djerrkura has not played a league game this season despite impressing Cats officials during the NAB Cup pre-season competition and in the VFL competition with Geelong.
“He’s not that far off,” Balme said. “If there was room there we’d certainly fit him, he’s that close.
“Nathan’s done all we’ve asked of him. He’s quick, tackles hard and makes the ball his main objective, which is great for a first year player.
Drafted at No.25 overall in the last year’s AFL Draft, Djerrkura was an All-Australian in his last least of under-18 football with NT Thunder.
The former Wanderer’s player went to Geelong with a reputation for getting the hard ball and running with it.
“In truth he’s probably been a bit unlucky but that will change if he keeps having a crack.”
Balme said Darwin-born Brad Ottens would start against his old club Richmond on Sunday after nearly playing against the Kangaroos.
Small forward Matthew Stokes was less conspicuous in the 16-point loss to the Kangaroos, but he is expected to retain his spot against the Tigers.
“Actually it’s beginning to look like one or the other in the side with Matty and Nathan, they are both small forward, midfield types,” Balme said
