WEST Australian midfielder Josh Schoenfeld has capped a strong week at the NAB AFL Draft Combine by setting a new record in the three-kilometre time trial.

The Peel Thunder product completed the final event of the week on Sunday with a run of 9:15 minutes, eclipsing the all-time record set by Sydney Swans academy player Jack Hiscox last year (9:18 minutes)

Schoenfeld was able to back up his beep test win on Saturday, when he recorded the second best ever shuttle run in combine history by reaching level 16.2.

That put him second only to Billy Hartung, who blitzed the beep test with 16.6 in 2013.

Schoenfeld, who played four games for Western Australia at its poor under-18 carnival during the middle of the year, improved his stocks across the carnival.

But can he play football ...?.. My sources say below average at best - as a Sun hope they are wrong...

I've seen all I need to see.

The King approves.

Not convinced he's a footballer as yet. Never stood out when I watched him but he seems an incredible athlete. Will watch with interest as he develops. Jury is definitely out here.

Joshua Schoenfeld - 9:15 minutes

Thomas Jok - 9:47

Mitchell Hibberd - 10:02

Declan Mountford - 10:04
Brayden Hackett - 10:06

Ben Keays - 10:09

Daniel Rioli - 10:09

Mason Redman - 10:12

Nash Holmes - 10:16

He did'nt just beat them in the time trial he thrashed them , he's a freak fitness wise just hope he can play footy.

What I did notice from those highlights was that he always seemed fresh as a daisy (not the Thomas variety) and made his opponents look sluggish. Like how he moved too and looked a good size as well. Kid can play.

From Snoop's phantom draft...

# 55 Carlton – Josh Schoenfeld (Peel Thunder / 186cm / 75kg)

One of the few that really took my eye at the Champs and was pleased to see him test so well at the Combine. He had a number of good performances across the champs and whilst there isn’t a real standout feature to his game he does everything well. In fact in the game vs Metro I thought he was a key part of what got them back into that game. Read the play well, has no problems winning his own ball, was clean when taking the ball at ground level, has a burst of acceleration, made good decisions and used it well. His vision and awareness stand out and the fact he has such terrific endurance I think will ensure he goes in the middle part of the draft. Good solid player.

It's hard for you guys to get a handle on what he's really capable of by watching those carnival highlights. Obviously WA had a shocker of a time in their games and many of them didn't get the opportunity with ball in hand a lot to really showcase their skills.

All I can say is that he goes to my sons school (Comet Bay College) which has a Australian rules football specialist program and from what I've heard from other kids and coaches he has an outstanding attitude to everything he does in his footy.

I went down to watch a Peel Thunder colts game during the year and was extremely impressed with his skill and pace. It was a mid week night game and they crushed the top wafl colts side that night with Schoenfeld one of their best.

Great skills, great tank and just one of those kids who stands out with his class and decision making.

It's a great pick for the Suns.

You guys just don't know it yet.

But you soon will.

I might be an odd one out but I watched Josh's highlights video for the first time after we drafted him and was very impressed. He may not be a superstar but he has some very good attributes. His running power alone is a weapon if used correctly. Good size too.

Something I noticed in this video with Dixon (go to 0:47) was that it sounds like they never did 3km time trials at the Suns. No wonder the players weren't fit, Schwerdt was cheating them by 33%! Hopefully Cordy runs a better program. Try looking for Joel Wilkinson's 3km time trial results. I tried and I couldn't find it. I think it's because they never did it.

Yeah he's a good size alright. Obviously needs to put on 10 kgs as most 17-18 year olds do, but his performance in the endurance tests was outstanding.

His elite fitness levels just show how committed he has been to his dream of making it the AFL.

From club footy to school footy and onto WAFL colts/ state footy, he's done everything right to get this far.

What I've heard from blokes I know who play with him at Peel is that he is the most committed player in the squad and goes above and beyond the standard effort in everyone he does in his footy.

These are the type of 'kids' every club wants. Kids who have all the talent, pace, fitness and more importantly, the right attitude to work hard in an AFL club environment and handle it mentally.

He's grown up near the beach and I'm sure he's going to love the whole GC lifestyle of sun, beach and playing footy...without the interest in other activities that's usually associated with the city.

Good kid from a good family who'll serve your club well.

Can't wait to see his league debut.

They're still running the 2k :(

Nah Cordy is here , but they are doing 2km time trial still , think most clubs do.

Most clubs/academies have moved to the 2km time trial, but often they will do it more than once with a specific amount of time rest to see how well players can recover and perform another similar effort. This is more similar to the running styles of a game, as no-one is going to run 3km flat out during a game. It's more beneficial to the coaching staff to know how quickly players can recover and go again than how quickly they can run a long way I guess.

I don't know why we picked this guy

Cause he's highly skilled.

If he was playing for S.A or Vic metro this year he wouldve picked up an extra 50 touches.

not his fault his squad had many average players.

If he can get out on a wing he will easily get 20+ touches a game once he's body's developed, he runs hard up and down the ground but most importantly runs to the right spots.
