Dual console owners: comparison thread

Can anyone recommend me any good racing games?
I'm looking for split-screen multiplayer (most racing games now amazingly have no split-screen on PS3, even though ALL my previous racing games do) and preferably online multiplayer as well.

I was interested in Burnout, but it has no split-screen.
I will buy GT5P as well because it's only $50.

$50 for a demo is p. steep.

Guess the PS3 has some trouble with the Cell handling split screens, as well as not supporting basic things like voice chat, or a custom soundtrack of your favourite driving tunes, during a race. You won't be able to start a private race for you and a friend online either.

Ha, so you actually know PS3 exclusives suck?

No. I know that the crapbox 360 is chock full of average to below average FPS titles. I also know the PS3 has a lot of high quality games. I know this because I own both consoles and play both almost daily.

Don't think not owning an expensive disappointment of a console is going to stop me commenting.

I'm sure it won't stop you. But don't think I'm afraid to continually point out why my opinion is more informed and less biased than yours.

It isn't a demo, it's a title in it's own right. The GT5 demo has been available since the PS3's launch and is free.

I suppose when comparing both the 360 and PS3 for driving titles, I would give the nod to the PS3. Being that this is the dual console owners thread, I'm left wondering what you're doing here considering you don't seem to be asking for advice (though you probably are, in your own way).

Anyway, to the bloke who was wondering about racing titles, let me ask you this: Look at the picture below, and tell me which pictures of which cars are reality, and which are GT5, give it a go:

In fact, here's a whole quizz for you to take, I'd love to see if anyone, especially LLD, can get more than half:

Then consider GT5 has more features, more players online, more cars and is more realistic and I think it's safe to say GT5 > Forza 2.

All the bullcrap and *** for tat point scoring aside, i've been a massive fan of GT since its release in...what was it...'98? Owned every version and loved them.

It'll need more than good looks to beat forza 2, which is the superior of all previous GT titles by miles. But this is the first crack for GT on a next gen console, so thats irrelevant. It looks awesome in terms of graphics, but really, i couldn't care less about that unless its vastly improved in other areas compared to previous GT titles.

I want better AI, the NPC AI in even GT4 was non existant, the cars just ran on rails. In Forza, NPC cars react to you depending on how you drive. If you're really aggressive and run them off the track, they'll start doing the same to you, in a very smart way.

I want realistic damage. You could smash a car into a barrier in GT4 and it would come out without a scratch, it was ridiculous. Cars in Forza get bent right out of shape in bingles, steering gets bent, gearboxes broken.

I want new tracks, rather than just racing around trial mountain and the autumn ring for the 5000th time.

I want a good online experience, Forza again is the benchmark. If it can equal it, or better it, along with these other features, it'll be a serious contender.

I want fully customizable decals on cars, again, ala forza 2.

You can talk graphics all you want, it'll need the above to improve on forza 2. If it does, it'll almost make me consider buying a ps3 to play just it alone. If it doesn't, and is just GT4 with HD graphics and ordinary online capabilities, i'll probably stick with F2

Good post and you make a lot of valid points.

From what I've read the online will feature 12 player multi - which trumps Forza, plus it's built in to Home somehow as well. Not sure if that means you can take one of your Gran Turismo cars out for a spin in the Home-world but it sounds promising.

Also interesting is the ability to watch episodes of Top Gear from the game - not sure how it will work or whatever, it isn't really even a big feature imo.

I'm 99% car damage won't be in it. If that's a big concern to you it might not be worth a purchase. I'm 99% sure the decals will be available though.

I do know the AI has been upgraded dramatically, instead of just the usual 'race lines' the previous titles had, which could get more than a little boring I must say.

Personally, with a game like GT the fun has always been in getting the fastest lap compared to your buddies. In my uni days we used to literally sit for hours drinking piss and trying to get best lap time. With the online functionality looking to be a huge focus of the new one, coupled with quite possible the most beautiful graphics yet seen on a video game outside of Crysis, GT5 looks pretty damn impressive.

ROFL, big surprise there.

There we go again, KPs catch-all statement - more features :o

But you have nothing to back that up. Again.

12 player online I'll give you, that's pretty cool. But what are these features? Custom soundtrack? No. Voice comms while racing? No. Realistic damage? No.

Ooh, I can watch episodes of Top Gear? Glad I bought an expensive console and a $50 demo so I could watch Top Gear :thumbsu:

More realistic huh? Driving around in my invincible car against zombie drivers, yeah, feels like real life.

I'm going to ask you for advice now - I came into a bit of cash, so I went out and bought a PS3 the other day. I got it with Resistance and Uncharted.

Uncharted is really boring, and Resistance is terrible, so I think i'll trade them in. Any suggestions?

Yeah, sorry. I didn't think a simple question such as that needed a whole new thread about it.

Anyway, 2-player splitscreen has been added to GT5P, so I'm really happy.

I wasn't talking to you with that comment, sorry for the confusion.

IMO the graphics in GT games have always been awesome in intro's and replays but have lacked somewhat in the actual game.

Most screens/vids you will see online wont be of in game footage.

He was talking to me, but as the proud new owner of a PS3, I feel I now belong in this thread.

So, where's those games suggestions?

Polyphony are notorious for putting out false shots and video, which are not at all in game representations.

Same. I remember many a time coming home after a big night on the piss and racing my mates for hours. It was one of the first games you could bring a memory card to a mates place and use your fully set up cars in split screen races. Obviously redundant in todays online world, but pretty cool.

I'd raced trial mountain so much over the years, when it was like 3am and i was barely awake, i could do a split screen race, close my tired droopy eyes for the only straight on the track (the undulating one after the tunnel and before the big left hand sweeper), and open them exactly when i needed to in order to take the bend.:D

GT is a great game, i absolutely love it. No damage will be a massive disappointment if its not in there, but i guess i could live without it. But it is a great way to stop guys playing bumper cars in online games. If you're in the lead on forza 2, and someone brakes super late into a tight bend to smack you in the arse and off the track (an old gt trick), they will certainly smash their radiator and steering, putting them out of the race. It just makes things fairer.

The online game will also need to be ranked somehow. Forza has a trueskill ranking system, much like other ranked 360 games. It only puts you in races against people of equal skill, so every race is as close as possible. Its no fun being put in races with guys you just have no chance of beating. I'm pretty good at racing sims as they're up there as my fav sort of game, but some guys are just crazy good online.

Hope it has custom decals. The forza system is tedious, but it does allow you to make any sort of paint job you want. I have an awesome West Coast Eagles Camaro, complete with perfect eagle logos and lettering, SGIO and Hungry Jacks decals. It was Number 3 and had Judd on the rear quarter window, but thats changed now obviously. Its now #21;)

All i'll say is i'm a massive GT fan, and Forza 2 copied it shamelessly, but in doing so also improved on it a lot. GT5 will need to be very impressive to top it, and flash graphics alone won't get the job done.

But yeah, i imagine this will be the game that makes me buy a ps3 to sit next to the 360.

Actually, there isn't any difference anymore - it's all pre-rendered CGI, the entire game.

Have you played the HD GT demo? It's been around since the PS3 launched - it looks exactly like the screen shots, but in game.

I made a mistake before too, online is actually 16 players, not 12.

Bwahahaha. The entire game is prerendered????? Well I hope you don't intend on actually steering or anything.

Cool, that means I'll be able to play GT5 on my DVD player! Dude, Shrek is prerendered.

rick, you've said some silly things, but that's hilarious.

Lies imo.

What didn't you like about Resistance? Actually, come to think of it, I can't remember you ever saying you enjoyed a video game.

Anyway, some other games worth a look are Folklore, DMC4, Ratchet and Clank and Motorstorm.

Heavenly Sword is worth playing but I'd only recommend a hire - it will blow you away graphically and uses the sixaxis really well in some segments, but it's pretty short lived.

Definitely hire. I finished that game in a day on my mates ps3, and the combat is so shallow that there is pretty much zero replay value.

Ratchet and clank is a great game, ditto Uncharted imo.

Motorstorm is pretty forgettable

Resistance is showing its age, but its an ok shooter.
