How much ate they? I asked at this shop it is a pioneer dual-layer and they ask for $170 is that too much or about right? And to burn games for playstation 2 (i know its illegal) do you need a dvd burner and dvd cd's or can you do it with a cd burner? I'm just curious!

If you look around you might be able to pick it up for $160

On the PS2 thing, you will need to get it 'chipped' so it can play backup dvd's, but as i don't own a ps2 i don't know more then that.

As this is a backup guide site, i think the mods might let me get away with this, read this article:

http://www.fileforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48609

Oh and if you do post on that site, expect a banning if you mention the samething you mentioned here, they have absoutley no tolerance what so ever, unless you own the original game.

As i said i was just curious, i have no intention of doing it. I went to few more places and it was 170 everywhere so i bought it for 170 but what does dual layer mean?

a normal dvd disc is 4-ish gb's.. but with dual layer, i think, its 12-ish gb's you can do.

.. but only if you buy the dual layer discs.

Don't worry to much about dual layer - they will be very expensive (ie. the media) when they arrive, and will stay that way for a while.

In any case, I recommend that you buy a Pioneer DVD burner. Very good!

I got one today, it is a dual layer but the plain cd is still only 4gb why is that? And also why cant i burn the dvd's that i borrow?

if its 4'ish gb its a single layer dvd, i don't think dual layer dvd's are easy to come by yet.

So i got ripped off? I was told that it was dual layer pioneer i paid $170? Should i go back to the shop or what?

you need the special discs... which are dual layer discs, because they hold more than the dvd-r discs.

so no - you weren't ripped off.

if you wanted, you could buy some dual layer discs, to burn more onto, i guess.. but i've been told they're $20+

what lozstar said, you can also burn normal CDR/CDRW disc as well, you need to ask for dual layer DVD's next time, but they are way too pricey at the moment imo.

You need to shrink the files so they fit on a 4GB disc. http://www.videohelp.com/
You can download free software (dvd shrink) from there that can do it for you. Plenty of guides also to help you get started.

The Pioneer 108/A08 is their latest. It is dual-layer compatable. I'm holding back on purchasing one, at least until dual layer media is available at a reasonable price. My Pioneer 107/A07 is serving me well right now. Will just get a D/L to replace my CD/RW.

Looking down the track a bit, 25 GB DVD's should be mainstream in 3 or so years. But like I'm gonna wait for that!

I think they've also made a Terabyte disk that burns with a blue laser?? Don't know if they'll produce many of those, they are bigger than DVD's I think.

Thanks to everyone for their help, i didnt know that there is special dual layer dvd's, i thought you could do it with the normal dvd's.

P.S. How can i copy the dvd's that i borrow from blockbuster or video ezy? They say that it is copy protected or something?

if you use dvd shrink you can choose to keep the chapters at the cost of some quality, you probably won't notice the difference anyway.

You will need to run a program like 'AnyDVD' in the background. It removes protection etc.
