Does it make any difference?

They seem to have no intention of playing him. Now they have an excuse.

Crash-landing puts paid to Poyas' season
By Chloe Saltau
July 11 2002

As if Richmond's season of discontent was not complete, Ezra Poyas last night badly broke his collarbone when he hit the ground after flying to take a "speccy" at training.

Poyas was taken to hospital to have plates surgically inserted in his collarbone and, although football manager Trevor Poole said he hoped Poyas could return in time to play VFL finals for Coburg, his season with the Tigers is finished.

But even as an already bleak winter darkened for the Tigers, Joel Bowden suggested the other major upheaval at Tigerland this week, the demotion of Matthew Richardson, would have a silver lining.

Although Poyas had been due to return from a hamstring strain through the VFL, Bowden said Richardson's absence, however fleeting, could perhaps restart the career of a player such as Andrew Mills.

"It gives someone else an opportunity to play. It's unfortunate for Ezra, because he got hurt tonight, but maybe Andrew Mills, who hasn't played a game this year, might get a game. He's a tall forward; he might play a really good game. It might start his career," Bowden said. "And if he plays a ripper of a game and everyone else does their job, we might get up."

Melbourne's performance against Brisbane at the Gabba last Sunday suggests that is not hopelessly wishful thinking for the Tigers, who play the Lions at Colonial Stadium on Saturday night.

Bowden, who has spent much of this year trying not to listen to the vitriol on talkback lines from Richmond supporters who appear to have taken to him as a whipping boy, expects to play a key role as a marking forward in Richardson's absence.

With the return of Greg Stafford from suspension to do the bulk of the ruckwork, Bowden expects to line up in the forward line as a marking option alongside Brad Ottens and Kayne Pettifer. Captain Wayne Campbell said yesterday Richardson would still have been demoted if Stafford had not been available.

Although his time in the forward line has been hard going, Bowden said he had tried to ignore the sometimes rabid criticism from beyond Punt Road's walls. "Obviously you hear comments around the place. It's more important to me what the coaching staff and the senior players at the club say, and if I'm on the right track I'd rather hear it from the senior coach and the coaching staff, and if I'm on the wrong track I need to hear it from them as well," he said.

"I've got a lot of improvement in the way that I approach the game . . . I've probably played in the forward line the last eight weeks, and it's been a learning experience at times because when you don't play in one area of the ground for a few years, you don't actually know exactly what's going on all the time.

"I used to think (up forward) was the best position to play because you get to kick the goals. But sometimes it can be incredibly hard and you don't actually get to take the shots that often."

To that end, after the inaccuracy that riddled last Friday night's one-point loss to Carlton, poise in front of goal will be a particular focus this week.

"We haven't had a great month or so . . . but (the Melbourne game) showed if you can get your game going and play your best football, you're a chance to beat the reigning premiers," Bowden said.

Poyas' mishap happened as the players were practising high leaps. As soon as he crashed to the ground, landing heavily on his collarbone, medical staff and trainers huddled around and he came off cradling his left arm.

Poyas had managed only three senior games so far this season, but his form in the VFL suggested he would have reappeared for the Tigers as they try to salvage something from the last phase of the year.

oh that's no good an other injury but yeah we never really gave him a chance for some reason.why didn't we give Ezra a fair go?.

Bad luck for Ezra. I really can't see him being on our list next year. If he moves on I really hope he succeeds and is given a decent chance.
