How do people deal with fears that can seem irrational?

I have a flight to Tel Aviv tomorrow night, and I can't seem to shake off this nervousness about it. Despite knowing the chances of anything happening are pretty remote... it still persists.

Do people have similar fears about things? How do you deal with them?

I have a fear of flying too. Spending so much time around the tropics only made it worse with all the turbulence. I don't deal with it well.

Fine line between fear and being alert. Being alert is good. Look on the bright side Sbagman. Your plane won't get hijacked and nothing will happen to you in Tel Aviv airport - 100% guaranteed. And you are about to encounter some of the hottest looking booty on the planet at those Tel Aviv clubs.......dark skin...green eyes...arrrghhhhhhhh :p

Had a fear of heights for years..made life as a volunteer fire-fighter interesting.

Haven't really gotten over it.

On flying, I was scared before I took my first ever flight. I was fine. All I did was, during take-off and landing, just gripped the armrests and ride the vibrations.

Yeah I've heard some of those chicks go off.... errr.....

Yeah yeah yeah I'll be fine. Still, knowing Italian security....

I know the feeling sbagman. I am flying back to Australia on July 1st on Aeroflot and feeling uncertain about it. I read an article yesterday that flying is 20 times safer than driving so that made me feel a bit more secure. Good luck. I am sure it will be fine.

There'll be at least two armed guards on that flight. Pass the time by trying to pick them:p hint: down the back with twitchy hands and abnormal bulges

I have a fear of crowds. Not so much of crowds as being crushed by them, or losing my oxygen (claustrophobic it seems, although I rarely admit that's what it is.) I tend to forget about this fear, stop thinking about it entirely, and rarely take it into consideration when I'm planning what to do. However when I find myself in a crowd that starts to get a bit tight, every now and then I have a full on panic attack. That's rather scary - probably not the best way to fight fear, but nobody can accuse me of being scared of looking my phobia right in the face... every-freaking-new years eve. Sorry I can't be any more helpful than telling you what -not- to do.

Oh and have a wonderful time! Sounds fantastic.

It was the cheapest.:D
Actually it's only Aeroflot to Japan then QANTAS to Australia.

Really? That helps alot actually.

Cheers!

Depends if you are talking about fear or a genuine phobia. If it's a phobia then take it from me there is little you can do to control it. But if it's just an uneasy feeling you have about the flight then the best solution is to drink a lot. Stay nice and mellow for the whole trip! :D
