I'll put you on my list. I'm Troving every score from every game, starting from 1941 and going backwards. I've also copied everything on Phil Gluyas' site, where he has written down every score in everything since 2000, and I then tidy them up and add a few things where I can...

Phil reckons he is happy to share his work with anyone.

Might be worth sending him a message. Just need to go around in circles a few times to get anywhere

I am after the programs they sell at the gate at matches.
I am following the progress of your research of Tassie footy history though and I look forward to seeing its release in the future.

Could you please provide a link to the site?

It's going to have to be a shared resources model to do it the justice it deserves, it's so big! Once it gets a little promotion, get the idea out there, I can envisage a squad of people each taking charge of their own bit and doing it all to a common format...

I know Phil and I have just sent him a message on your behalf. I will get back to you when I receive an answer.

My book on WA footy state wide from 1885-1945 is still being edited (you'll know who I am now!) but I hope to have it out by the end of the year.
Ha, legend...just had an image of you ripping the mask off Scooby Doo style...you would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those pesky kids. I'm using his stuff as a template, because it puts a structure in my own research, but I'd like to thank the guy for his amazing effort and personally ask him if he's cool with it, even though you guys have said he would be. Tried the contact route after reading this last night, but I just don't understand his site...! Bloody massive...

Looking forward to your book too. It's only in the last year or so I've decided to devote my energies only to Tasmania, for reasons I said in that FB page...it's just so huge. But I've got a few thousand pages built up over a few decades copying and pasting WAFL, SANFL and VFL scores which need editing, which might never be now. I also had a hard drive accident and might have lost all my cricket (could be a blessing in disguise!). I'm figuring these really are for my own interest and you can get this info from a few places, unlike Tassie which needs the urgent attention (although the VFL isn't doing footy history any favours), so they've been relegated. I love it all though, just fascinating. Some people read novels, I just get lost in this. Part of the reason it's taken me ages to do the pre-war stuff is reading other historical articles, especially the war stuff...

So...it's now past the end of the year...!

Coincidentally, my editor sent me the last of his proof yesterday and I just finished making the amendments this morning. The poor bugger had to cross-check so many pieces of information so it took a little longer than hoped.

I just need to finish cross-checking my list of premiership-winning clubs and then finalise the pictures that will be included in the book.

I'm expecting printing to be done sometime in March ... just in time for the new season.

For those interested, in Western Australia between 1885 and 1945:

There were 1615 clubs (including different names for the same club) that fielded 7917 teams in 61 seasons.
They played in 232 different competitions (that used 315 different names, e.g. WAFA/WAFL/WANFL)

There were 1928 competition/carnival/knockout seasons played, with 1935 teams being declared premiers (including shared premierships)
I have been able to confirm 1797 premiership winners, which were shared between 631 different clubs (39.07% of all clubs won at least one).
There were 41 suspended seasons (most due to war or disputes)
There are 97 unknown premiers (although as many as 10 of these may be because a league disbanded mid-season but can't be confirmed)

94.99% of all premiers have been captured.
82.23% of all ladders (either final placings, partial or full ladders) have been captured.

Just remembered this. Recently, went scoping a bit further into Trove to find material from newspapers that weren't the Big Three in Tassie, and found two that are utter gold - Voice, which was sold on Saturday night and would have a full wrap up of that day's TFL complete with accurate player lineups, and the Huon newspaper, which gave a lot of detail about the local footy. Was putting together 1936, so I went there first, and did that season - it was a great read! Cronyism, corruption, underdogs...it had everything. The committee for the HFA back then were Cygnet old boys, and near the end of the season put their team into the finals by using a very dodgy interpretation of percentage which the controlling body, the TANFL, rejected. Lots of grizzling and appeals. Amongst all that, a game between Huonville and Kermandie was replayed at the end of the season, because when it was played in June, the goal umpires couldn't agree...the conversation literally was "I saw the goal and I saw you raise the flags"..."no, you didn't"...! At stake was Huonville's place in the finals. Huonville and Kermandie dominated the first half, but Franklin and Cygnet came home with a rush during the rounds where wins were worth 6 points, a thing at the time designed to give slow season starters a better chance of making the finals (in the same season, the TFL rule stating "most wins earns you the right to challenge", not ladder position, was tested because Lefroy won the most games but 6 pointers put NH on top...Lefroy had to play the 2v3 semi, but had the right to challenge no matter what happened, which rubbed everyone except Lefroy the wrong way). Franklin were heavily criticised for being the only team with a ground that wasn't a quagmire during the season, meaning they had better access to training...the arguments were petty. And after all that, avoiding the spoon only after the TFL got heavy on the HFA, Franklin played 4 finals, and lost the GF to Kermandie...on GF Day, played on the last Saturday in October just to piss off the cricketers, everyone turned up to the ground to discover no umpire had been appointed and there were no new footies for the game...the time wasted to fix these problems, solved by someone driving to Franklin to get a new ball intime for the Q2, and finding an experienced umpire in the crowd who'd turned up initially thinking he was going to have a day watching as a spectator, agitated the crowd to the point of infighting...!

Below 1936 are the rough notes for 1910, the first year of the Huon Newspaper available on Trove. That year, the Dalton Shield was the area's footy comp, a perpetual series of challenge matches. Huonville and Kermandie pretty match tossed that between themselves, but were open to other teams from anywhere. Huonville won the first one, and fielded offers from teams like Sandfly and Woodbridge during the season - any game below with those teams playing each other is a Dalton Shield match, and there were 8 matches. Alongside, with high hopes, they started the Franklin comp with three teams - Union, United and Franklin Rovers (the Franklin area's combined side was known as Federal, and played challenge matches later in the season). They got through the first three matches, a win each, but then the Dalton Shield started and wrecked it all. Players were poached by Huonville, and after a wet postponement, and a few Dalton matches, they finally scheduled game 4 but only half of each team showed up - everyone else cbf, and had gone to watch Huonville! There were also player boycotts of the committee and the resident umpire...a total mess. In amongst that, teams like Lovett and Upper Huon got games wherever they could. It appears there was also a Huon Association with Geeveston (as opposed to Kermandie), Port Cygnet and Liverpool, but not much other detail...

Cygnet 18 8 10 - 156-201 1137 167-218 1220 93.20 40

Near the end of the season, before the round and the rematch, Cygnet were placed ahead of Franklin because of their better percentage in H2H v Franklin, and the rest of the season’s results in calculating percentages were ignored. Protracted disagreement between committee members, and when the TFL was consulted and restored Franklin using all results, Cygnet appealed because they thought a previous decision reached (in their favour) couldn’t be changed. Same thing happened in juniors, but there was no protest.
