Wondering if any one else thinks we need to stack up with an extra tall in the forward line. I beleive that when we have played our best footy [rare] it has been when we have kicked quickly and directly to tall options stationed deep in the forward line. Noticed also that in the second half against Collingwood that Hawthorn left Buddy and Roughhead deep and regularly kicked long to create contests.Even when Buddy was not kicking goals the pressure the defenders were under created goals for others. I think we should leave Waite and Hendo in the forward zone and also consider even someone like Jacobs to be in the square. This would then give us capable targets that we could kick long and quick to. Believe that the pressure from this style of play could set up opportunities for the small forwards also. As it is we often have no tall options which then creates hesitancy from players upfield and gets us into a defensive mindset. We have a talented group of players but so often play below our talent level. Think that having tall targets up forward and kicking long to them could have a positive affect on the confidence all over the ground. It may sound like old fashioned footy but it has seemed to be far more effective for us than the other things we have been trying.

We need to keep the forward line as open as possible so our forwards have space to work in.

Exactly. Henderson to lead out wide from CHF as he always does with Waite plonked in the goal square.

Gives Eddie, Yaz and Jeffery tons of room to work in. It's these three who hold the key to us getting over the Swans.

Waite and Henderson are doing alright and will do better next season. We only really have O'hAilpin as another option in the forward line. Kreuzer will be there next year for the three pronged forward line option.

If we are going to play Kreuzer forward we have to persist with him up there and allow him time to develop like you do with all tall forwards.

Ideally we'd also have a fit and in-form Setanta down front as well. Both Hendo and Waite, while at times good, have also faded for long periods during matches.

You don't always get what you want.

Yes we need Brad Fisher in the side we should rookie list Mitch Thorp for next season never know might make it with his second shot is young still

I would consider a ruckmen playing forward for parts of the game.

Sydney are a small side, Grundy & Richards are not big.

Hendo,Waite & Hammer/Warnock/Jacobs could make things difficult for them.

Weather forecast is for a bit of rain, this could prevent 3rd tall option.

Hendo, Waite, Robbo and the Indigenous trio are fine.
We don't need more options, we just need consistency from the options we have.

Good idea. But here are a few points:

1 - would be good to have an extra tall down there as last time (if i remember correctly) all Sydney did was flood our backline and all we could do was kick it long but to no marking options. However they actually need to be able to take a CONTESTED mark. See below.

2 - we need to be careful that these marking options can actually mark (i.e. Hampson is not best known for his marks down forward) because if the ball hits the deck, Sydney's run out of defence will kill ala last time we played.

3 - there needs to be a perfect mix of size. so not just having 3 talls and 3 smalls. that is too extreme - for reasons outlined above.

Ideally we would have Henderson at CHF with Waite on a HFF, and then a goal-kicking gun at the FF position, for which we had O'hAilpin initially and then tried out Hampson there also.
A glaring gap that will be looked at in the off season I'm sure, if not for back up alone.
Pavlich anyone :)
we wont get pav, but i agree we need a big body in the goal square so that waite can use his athleticism and speed on the flank. the bloke i have in mind to try for would be lynch from the eagles. before anyone jumps down my throat, consider this.........he is big bodied/ can take a big grab/ kicks like a mule/and has told the eagles he wants out !!! he is supposed to be mates with juddy, and has fallen out with worsfold. he can also pinch hit at chb, and although 27 already he would fit rattens comments about bringing in some older guys to help with experience and supporting the kids in the club. he was one of the afl`s leading goalkickers a few seasons ago,and due to him wanting out, (he knocked back a new contract with w.c.) i don`t believe he would cost much in the way of a deal, and maybe if carlton wanted him the could offer up someone like steven browne who is from the west. we have flankers but not enough kpp. at least this guy is big !!! ;)

carlton is looking at someone to take grabs on the half forward line, and that is why mckinley has been mentioned in trade talk, but if waite could play out there it would solve the problem. that`s why they tried to get okeefe from syd two years ago. we have`nt had a guy like that since hammill.

This may be so however it is hard to be consistent as a marking forward when half the time you are directed to be down the ground. All too often our players get the ball across half back and centre and look down to a forward line with few if any Carlton players present.

I believe that we would be best optioned to keep 6 forwards in the forward line if Sydney decide to flood. At least then we can have a contest in our forward line. Also I believe that Waite, Jacobs and Hendo are all capable of either marking or bringing the ball to ground. 3 and 3 may not be the perfect mix all the time however keeping our 6 forwards near the forward line for the majority of the time is the best mix in my opinion.

If you're going to do that you'd play Fisher from the goalsquare as our list stands now, although not quite the gun you're talking about. Best we have though as it stands if we decided to go that way. at least he can grab a mark and did destroy the Swans almost on his own during the 3rd qtr of last years game
