Hello one and all
I’ve never been a fan of having to pay for something without getting full use of it.
However having missed a number of games which haven’t gone free to air, I might just have to get Foxtel.
(yes I know I can go to one of the pubs and watch it but I like to copy the games and rewatch at my leasure)
If I could I’d be happy to sign up for the sports channels only, but from what I can see, that doesn’t seem to be an option.

I would be interested in peoples opinion on what people think are
:the best packages (subjective I know)
:the equipment needed (dont understand what IQ does as opposed to other equipment???)
:and is Foxtel the only provider in Aust.

Cheers

Crock - if you wanna get value for money out of Foxtel you need the IQ.

The IQ is basically a hard-disk recorder but it is completely integrated with their TV guide etc, so in my case at the start of the season I set the IQ to record On The Couch & series link it, League Teams (or whatever its called these days) and series link that, Before the Bounce & series link that as well, then every week it automatically records them all for me and I can watch them when it suits me, skipping the ads and the boring bits. It's fantastic!

The idea is that the IQ means anytime you've got time to watch TV there's something you actually want to watch ready to go right then.

As far as packages go, I can't remember the exact details, but its something like you need to choose the Basic package plus the Sports package and off you go - its not expensive really (something like $20 a week would get you the IQ & both packages easily).

If you've got kids, a great trick is to get the kids package on for a month (costs $15 for a month or something along those lines), series link a bunch of their favourite shows and record them for a month then dump the package. You can then connect the IQ to a video recorder/DVD recorder or whatever and dump all their shows onto there leaving you with a free hard-drive to fill with footy shows.

If you've got a Hi-Def TV you'd want to get the IQ2, by the way, which is the High Definition version. This one also allows the 3D broadcasts (if you've got a 3D TV) and I think its got a bigger hard-drive.

And no, I don't work for Foxtel...

I'll let everyone on Foxtell into a bit of a secret.

Seems with all the digital free channells out there, Foxtel are losing customers fast.

Now I rang up a few months ago to cancel the service (I was paying around $70 per month) and went thru all the people trying to convince me to stay. I wasn't happy with the value I was getting.

I had been with them for 14 months at that stage.

Got a call two days before cut-off and was told that since I was a long time customer (cough) that they would give me ALL the channels (except movies and sport) and IQ for $47 per month!

So you ring em up and tell em your walking (provideded your out of contract), play hard ball and they will throw everything at you to keep ya.

Crock,

The best pack to get is Sports HD (everything except Movies) with the iQ2 - $79 a month with the EOFYS offer (usually $100), but you can change your pack every month if you want.

In my opinion, watching footy live, in HD, without ads is worth every cent.

I've got the 2008 GF in HD still on the hard drive, the 3rd quarter gets a fair run when Woodside Hawks comes to Melbourne to visit.

Cheers.

I don't have Foxtel anymore. Waste o'money.

But out here in the boonies where satellite is required, there is a trick.

You can get an extra set top box and remote for $15/month. These set top boxes will work on any Foxtel dish. So it isn't uncommon for one or two houses to take up two extra boxes each at a total of $130 odd per month and split them with two other neighbours. Platinum Foxtel @ just a touch under $45 a month.

And for what it's worth, you can record shows from the otherside of the world by just logging in via the foxtel website. As those would know who have foxtel, the guide only goes 1 week forward from the current date. So if i want to tape the Hawks game this friday, easy, just go to friday and record. Want to tape the game against Geelong next Saturday? You have to wait till this saturday before it will show up. I have just come back from a month away from football to a full IQ box of games and talk shows. Yay for me.

I'm on the iq sports package for an extra $16 per month I get to watch footy and cricket and boxing/martial arts for a combined total of $68 per month.
