In 2018 we changed the way the game was played. It won us a flag.

In 2019 we didn't make much changes and were out strategised by teams who figured us out.

What would you like to see tweaked in our gameplan for 2020?

More accountability in defence
Quicker ball movement from defence to the forward line. And less predictability, I swear there were games where we attempted the exact same ball movement from defence every single time. Kick wide to the same spot of the same boundary line. Same tall player attempting to mark it etc. Easiest thing in the world to counter.
A fit Nic Nat and Rioli found not guilty due to some dodgy loophole
The entire midfield to tackle like Yeo during that crazy purple patch he had midseason-ish, but all season long

Your dead right with the same ball movement out of the back line!
Use to shit me, time and time again with long balls out of defense 50. It was so predictable (Very woosha’es game style).

need quicker and more accurate ball movement out of forward 50!
this is were duggan and Nelson killed us, (turn over central).
if we are lacking in this area I wouldn’t be opposed to someone like TK/Shuey/Cripps coming off the HBF for 10-15 minutes at a time to try generate some speed and skill.

Also seemed like our boys would switch off for a quarter at a time, (no idea how you would coach this out of them) but it needs to stop!!
4 quarters of footy must be played to win games

the game plan was getting way too predictable bud, needs a tweak

When players are pulling into of contests and putting in half efforts all gameplans are losing ones.

Richmond's gameplan is just tackle and pressure and it won them two flags.

You don't need to be fancy you just need the whole team to buy in.

your right the pressure wasn’t there for 4 quarters last year, the long bombs and 30+ backwards kicks need to stop tho! Which in turn is game plan.

In all seriousness the issue of the 3rd quarter fade out that we trademarked last year needs to be addressed. I think many of our issues through the year was less due to our gameplan and more due to the team not executing.

Gov and Barrass were suspect at times, Barrass particularly later in the season.

Vardy was abysmal.

Darling righted the ship but started the year like someone who was scared of the ball again.

Cole and Duggan didn't develop the way we hoped.

I think TB addressed it best on the podcast, the players achieved the ultimate the season prior and lost that hunger and drive. They lost their purpose, and the drive of winning one for Shep, Nic and Gaffy wasn't enough.

They'll be hurting after the way the season ended, they'll want to redeem themselves. TK should help take our midfield up a notch. That drive should be back after the way we bowed out.

3 things I think they need to focus on improving (I'm assuming that there will be improvement around the middle and clearances organically with TK and more NN)

Faster ball movement out of defence (I have no issues with kicking backwards, but if you mark it then wander back off the mark and take 5 seconds to look then that creates pressure)

Increased forward half pressure (some of this is due to our f50 entry. Sometimes they need to accept a 50/50 contest deep forward is ok, as trying for the perfect hit up often leads to easy rebounds)

Significantly improve when the ball hits the deck. It might be a big call, but if we halve the ground ball gets stat (excluding clearances) I doubt we lose the game. That is follow up running but also better communication around marking contests and spoiling.

I just think we need to be a lot more bold with our ball movement. Teams adapted to our methodical build up out of defence and we were very restricted going forward. This probably means more speed is required on the wings, so perhaps Cameron/Venables/Petruccelle need to spend more time there this season. Gaff, Hutch, Masten etc. last year didn't provide that. Maybe Watson could play further up the ground? He's heir apparent to Jetta so getting senior games into him should be a priority.

So what's their drive/purpose for this season? They won 2 years ago, maybe they care more about $$$ and hitting the clubs afterwards?

Like I said, make up for the horror finish to the season we had and the inconsistency we showed.

We showed that our best footy was the best in the league last year. When we were on, we were untouchable. Sadly the gap between our best and our worst was inexplicably large.

At the risk of channelling a board meme, taking better advantage of the angles when moving the ball would be good. More short, 45 degree or less kicks if you don't have a long option.

Less gatorade into the sample jugs would be good

'Jugs'?? No wonder he was having trouble filling it!

The thing about a good game plan with the right personnel is, it doesn't matter if the opposition work you out. It just means they know in advance how your going to win.
