UNfortunately there is an old gardener's motto :

1 years seed = seven years weed.

the mulch ideas are good, but there is no such thing as a garden that you don;t have to get rid of weeds from. once you are on top of it just pull the weeds out or hoe them back in. Make sure you don't let them flower/seed.

The best thing for weeds is to have plants growing there to outcompete them.

If you nuke an area of garden, and plant nothing else, then weeds will come - it is what they exist for - recolonisation of disturbed ecosystems.

also - if there is no water for lawn, and it is not raining, then the weeds should not grow either - they also need water, so only a few weeds should pop up in summer.

you can get pretty low water use lawns nowadays, and although lawns have other problems like highish fertiliser needs, as a greenie I'd always rather see grass than nothing.

FFS sake get over your bullshyte, I doubt very much that any woman would want to bed you, you are so desperate for people to think you are a stud, you make up stories, you have admitted you are cold & emotionless, women hate your type, stop talking crap.
Jealousy is a curse.....and you have a dirty mind.
Who said I was talking about THAT sort of grass cutting???

Hello all,

We have recently cleaned out a whole lot of weeds in part of our backyard, and although we know we may ultimately be fighting a losing battle, we'd prefer these weeds never come back! The area itself was originally just sand pretty much, before I decided to place matting and bark over the top (after removing the weeds) 3 or 4 years ago.

Despite our best efforts, over the years the weeds fought their way through the matting and actually became part of the matting itself. It got ugly.

So now we've cleaned it all up again - does anyone have any tips/suggestions from experience as to what keeps weeds away for good?

I've been told weeds are bound to come back within a few years even if we place plastic matting and pebbles/bark over the top - so I guess I was just hoping there'd be a way to keep the area "weed-free" forever.

Any advice from any aspiring Don Burke's out there would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks. :)

Plant a pine tree (conifer) or two in the area.
Once established, nothing will grow beneath them.:thumbsu: not even weeds.

You may be able to buy some low-growing juniper types (golden yellow-green or grey-blue) .....you know the ones. They are hardy and can be cropped to suit your area with ease.
