Michael Gardiner's comeback from a knee reconstruction faces its first serious test this week since he broke down 10 months ago.
Foxsports reports the West Coast ruckman, who won All-Australian selection in 2003 despite missing five games through injury, has recovered from a damaged posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will play in a practice match on Friday.
Coach John Worsfold, speaking yesterday from the Eagles' training camp in Busselton in the southwest of Western Australia, said he expected the 25-year-old Eagles vice-captain to play the entire 50 minutes of the intra-club match.
"He's going really well and I'm confident he'll be available for most of the Wizard Cup series," Worsfold said.
"His comeback will obviously be managed and I'm just not sure whether I'll play him first-up against Fremantle on Friday fortnight."
Gardiner lasted just minutes into the third-round match last year against Essendon after he was dominant in the opening two games of the season.
Worsfold said Gardiner would would more than likely start 2005 in a back-up capacity to fellow ruckmen Dean Cox and Mark Seaby.
