Michael Gardiner's comeback from a knee reconstruction faces its first serious test this week since he broke down 10 months ago.

Foxsports reports the West Coast ruckman, who won All-Australian selection in 2003 despite missing five games through injury, has recovered from a damaged posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will play in a practice match on Friday.

Coach John Worsfold, speaking yesterday from the Eagles' training camp in Busselton in the southwest of Western Australia, said he expected the 25-year-old Eagles vice-captain to play the entire 50 minutes of the intra-club match.

"He's going really well and I'm confident he'll be available for most of the Wizard Cup series," Worsfold said.

"His comeback will obviously be managed and I'm just not sure whether I'll play him first-up against Fremantle on Friday fortnight."

Gardiner lasted just minutes into the third-round match last year against Essendon after he was dominant in the opening two games of the season.

Worsfold said Gardiner would would more than likely start 2005 in a back-up capacity to fellow ruckmen Dean Cox and Mark Seaby.

Don't know about you guys but I'm going to be very nervous every time the ball goes anywhere near him, and I dont think I'll feel confident about him getting through a whole game unscathed until he plays a whole season.

sounds encouraging, fingers crossed.

it seems beau mcdonald, who had the same surgury/inury, is really struggling and is no closer to playing this season after being injured in 2003!! (read that in the australian).

I remmember hearing Jacko on the radio a few years ago saying that it took him 2 seasons to recover mentally after his comeback.

Hopefully Gardi will be really positive in the way he plays this year and can reach some of the heights he reached in 2003.

Well Jako, according to his book, took doing his knee far worse than most players and it took him a few weeks to even accept his season was over.

On Gardi, well lets hope he stays fit...hopefully better luck than last time..

Did he have the same op? I seem to recall reading somewhere that Gardiner's surgery was fairly new for that sort of injury.

Yeah.. press I heard was that Beau McDonald, Goodes and a few others were waiting with interest to see whether's Gardiners was successful before taking a risk on the procedure.
