Hey all, Just curious about how people try out with VFL clubs and what to do if you would like to?
Also, would it be better to play with a club affiliated with an AFL club or not much difference?
And lastly, what are the sort of match payments for VFL players ?

Also I would love to hear about anyones experiences with trials at Clubs etc :) and sorry if this is the wrong board, I wasn't sure which one I should post it on.

Cheers, :)

I currently play in the VFL and hoping to be picked up in the AFL rookie draft this year. PM me if you have any questions, not willing to share it on here due to the amount of trolls/w***ers.

He's been red carded which is why.

My advice is call up the clubs and ask what their position is. Are the opening their arms to new players? Or are they trying to maintain a list. Do they need a specific sort of player? What employment opportunities are available if I have to relocate? What can the club do to help me?

If you find out the right questions to ask, you'll find the right answers.

Some strong replys already.

If you are a no name (no offense) The first thing they are going to ask you is what can you bring to the club? They may even ask for a referee in extreme cases (have a top coach to talk you up, will improve chances or could make things worse depending what they are after.

You need to contact them. I suggest sending letters to the clubs you are interesting in joining. Have them sent at the start of November no later as they invite others from local leagues to come and train. You need to show that you are keen and stand out and show strong qualities as you are always going to be on the top of the cuts list.
You stuff up once either by doing something which does not impress the coaching staff they will show you the door and thats the end of that.

Not knowing your ability I say go non AFL affiliated eg Frankston. AFL affiliate clubs don't really have time for local hopefuls as they have AFL players to develop.

You won't get payed to play sorry. At best you will get bar tab credit which is just as good.

All the best.

How many people try out a year, for a spot with a club ?

I can't speak specifically for the VFL but other clubs in state based competitions usually have 70 - 85 players trying out at the very, very start of pre-season.

Remember the previous season the club has about 55 - 60 players combining of league and reserves based players. These players need to tryout again. About 5 - 8 players leave per season due to retirement and work commitments. Roughly 15 - 18 who "graduate" from the colts system or TAC system come to the club. Club may personally contact roughly 5 - 6 players from the amateurs/country and ask them to come and do a pre-season. As you can see the training squad is fairly full as it is at the start that's why it is important to get in early and ask for the opportunity. Then the club may accept 5 - 8 players who personally contact them. Usually they will accept them as it is a win situation for them. Potentially they score a decent recruit or if they see you are a dud they will thank you for your time.

All the best with your aspirations

Have you had a junior career? Usually there's a VFL club that would be near where you played your junior footy and with luck you would know a few people associated with that club. I'm pretty sure virtually anyone can do preseasons with a VFL club, just send them an email/call them up and explain who you are - if you have any notable football achievements to date include them in your explanation.

And if you did make the final squad and play some ressies then I would think you would get paid, someone correct me here but I'm 99% sure you would get something per game.
