A friend of mine received a $100 myer gift card this christmas

he didn't want it so he went to myer and used it to purchase a $100 coles myer gift card
then went to coles and used that card to buy a $100 JB card

then went to JB to buy what he wanted

thought that was pretty funny

I saw that on Facebook, you're a fraud mate...

I got $50 Sanity voucher...I appreciate the thought but who buys CDs anymore

I hate GC's that expire. Shits me no end. The company has the money, so what difference does it make when it gets used?
Companies have to carry the value of unredeemed gift cards on their balance sheet as a liability, representing amounts owing to the customer. From the company's perspective it would be pretty annoying to have thousands of really old gift cards floating around out there, with no way of knowing which ones have been lost / destroyed and which ones might show up in one of their stores to be claimed one day.

If the majority of gift cards not redeemed within (say) a year will probably never be redeemed, it's easier and cleaner from an accounting perspective just to have old cards expire.

Oh i get that, but its not like they CAN'T do it, they just choose not to.... it makes life easier for them.... how about making the life easier for the customer? (this coming from someone who works for one of Australia's most successful retailers)

Because it's not really practical for the company to keep track of gift cards stretching back decades, just to appease the tiny percentage of people for whom it might actually be a problem for.

I can understand the inconvenience of gift cards that expire within a few months, but most of the ones I've seen are valid for like a year. Who takes a year to decide what to buy at JB Hi-Fi?

I like getting giftcards at discounted prices (eg: $50 card for $35 - $40) then using the full $50 on something worth that amount of money. Friends of mine do it on more of a grander scale, they'll get $500 worth of cards for $350-$400 of actual money... and buy something worth $500. They've also waited for the "sale" periods and would buy something worth $600 for less than $400. Getting more value for their money.

Was doing grocery shopping at Coles a couple of years ago and decided to get my dad a $100 itunes gift card for Christmas. I went through the self check out and scanned the barcode of the gift card and placed it in the bag and looked up to see that they had the screen for assistance. Guy comes over and punches in his numbers and asks us what happened and we said nothing. Got home put the groceries away and for some reason put the reciept in the bin only for my to realise a couple of days later that when the assistance screen came up it was to scan the gift card to activate it. Went back and explained and of course they asked if I had the reciept :(. I had to get a present for my dad so I ended up buying another $100 itunes gift card and made sure that this time it was activated! So basicly a $200 present to my dad and only $100 was ever going to be spent.

Got a $100 Myer gift card today from work. Went to Myer to try and buy $100 Coles-Myer gift card as I havent bought anything from Myer in about 10 years. Wouldn't let me do it, as in their system will not process it. Just checked the terms an conditions and it states you cant buy gift cards with gifts cards.
