Its occurred to me that over the last decade, Geelong has been the most prolific feeder club in the competition. Now I see that as a positive... I see it as a mark of respect to the recruiting team, that we have such a gluttony of talent, we need to give it away. Along the way, we've made some good calls, and we've made some bad calls. I've put together a team of Geelong delistings / trades, that have gone on to find success at other clubs, both individually and in a team Ive named that team below, but what I want to know, who have been the players that YOU feel were good calls and bad calls.

To all the other clubs who benefited from these blokes... youre welcome!

B: Josh hunt Jeremy Laidler Taylor Hunt

HB: Travis Varcoe Joel Hamling Josh Walker

c: Brent Prismall Garry Ablett Steven Motlop

HF: Steve Johnson Mitch Brown Josh Caddy

F: Nathan Vardy James Podsiadly Paul Chapman

Rucks: Shane Mumford James Kelly Allan Christensen

Interchange: Shannon Byrnes Dawson Simpson Geroge Horlin Smith Darcy Lang

Poor old GHS doesn't even get a start in the Rejects Mob.

Looking at that list - alot were let go when they were long in the tooth - and other clubs have done that - Hawthorn with Hodge Lewis and Mitchell

But of the younger players - Geel hasnt let much slip through the net . Hamling is a servicable and consistent fullback - but he took along time to make the grade - only got in the Doggies senior side about 8 games from their finals campaign in 16 - and only through an injury to someone else

Vardy had a great GF - but he was only servicable before that - and only got the recall from East Perth because of Nic Nats injury

Some Geel supporters are raving over Mitch Brown at Essendon . The Dons games i saw - he had the same problems he had at Geel . If Ess become like Geel ( when Brown was a Cats player ) a top team - lets see if Brown plays consistent good football

No i think Geel have done well - they havent let talent slip ( im excluding the Veterans - they cant play for ever - and you have to move them on at some stage

I think Geel are like the Eagles in the 90s when they were a powerhouse - everyone they traded or got rid of - did no good anywhere else - David Hynes - went to Freo - couldnt get a kick - ditto Craig Turley at Melb . And Geel got a stack of ex Eagles in that era and they were all no good

The history of top teams is they dont let talent out the door - you look at Carlton in their heyday - they only got rid of them when they were finished - pisssed alot of them over to the poor old Saints

How about Daniel Menzel in place of Darcy Lang, no real comparison in talent; matter of fact he'd be ahead of the majority of the guys you've named I guess.
I excluded players who haven’t actually played games for another club yet. He might get on the park for Sydney... he naught not. But that’s their Problem now

Walker was looking great last year. Stoked for him. Was always a bit of a fan.
Hope GHS does really well. Hope they try him as a forward. Have crapped on for years saying it's his natural possie.
Good thread.

I'd have liked to have kept Brent Moloney and Josh Caddy,i'd have signed Johnson and Chapman for two more Motlop was better than some we kept,we had no real choice with Ablett Mumford and Christensen. The rest were either at the end or giving nothing, poor old Kersto is he still with Freo.

Why do players leave teams?
(I) Lack of opportunity and to get a fresh start elsewhere, e.g., Hamling & Vardy
(ii) Money (Ablett, Mumford)
(iii) Because they are pushed/sacked/traded due to age, team balance or otherwise (Hunt, James Kelly, Johnson, Chapman, Moloney, Gore)
(iv) Special circumstances, e.g., because they don't like the club or something that happened at the club (Bundy, Nathan Ablett)
(v) To "go home" (Kelly 2020)

Have I left any category out?

We are only seeing the "tip of the iceberg" in player turnover. In a few years time we'll be able to field multiple teams on paper.

Steven King was also a better ruck than Shane Mumford.
Not the Steven King we gave away though. We gave away a guy past his best whereas has Mummy’s best was yet to come

(iv) was really 2 different categories; Nablett didn't want to play 1sts footy, and Christensen had to move interstate because of personal problems not related to the club.

Fair enough.
Have any idea what's happening with him by the way, last I heard (several weeks ago) he was injured.

Yep, pushed out due to being a bad influence, especially with the younger players, and ……………………. on second thoughts don't think I'll open that can of worms again. ;)

T'is why I categorised them as "special circs"

In some cases, it may not necessarily have been a bad call to move a player on; however, the compensation attained relative to the player's value was insufficient. Take Varcoe, for example. Undoubtedly, after some promising years, seemed to have become mired in a rut at Geelong and stagnated, a view shared by vociferous fans and, clearly, the club by the end too. However, I think it was also clear that the talent and ability were both there, and he has demonstrated this at Collingwood, which brings into question allowing him to go for a highly suspect Mitch Clark in return.

When I look back over the past, say, 25 years and without a rigorous analysis, I suspect the ledger is in our favour, i.e., the value of players we have picked up from other clubs outweighs the value of losses. GAJ is the outlier and possibly nullified by Danger.

We tend to remember the duds who came our way like Mitch Clark, but consider the ones that worked - Zac Tuohy, Danger, Henderson, Bluey McGrath, Pickering, John Barnes, Tom Harley, Cam Mooney, Brad Ottens, Brenton Sanderson, Ken Hinkley, Rex Hunt, Oysters Kilpatrick, and of course, Gary Ablett Senior

Don’t forget in this case to add his larger SC hit at the time and the TPP crunch we had .
