10. Ratchet & Clank (PS4) - 42 Points

what an extraordinary reboot. Almost everything about this game was perfect and exactly what I've wanted in an R&C game since the first one. Loved every second. If you haven't played it, get on it. A little short with minimal replayability but very well done.

9. Mafia 3 (XB1, PS4 & PC) - 44 Points

real repetitive but nice world, story, era setting and awesome music

8. Gears of War 4 (XB1 & PC) - 50 Points

Probably close to my favourite game in the series, Coalition showing how to continue a franchise while not shitting on the previous entries and its fans. Take notes, 343.

7. Doom (XB1, PS4 & PC) - 52 Points

I think one thing I've learned over the last year is to go in with low expectations on games as when they're amazing, they become even better when you come in with the expectation that it's not going to be much. I don't think I've had as much fun with a game as I had with Doom in a number of years. I was watching a video on Youtube the other day about games that make you feel like a badass, this game was no.1. Other than Kratos in God of War I couldn't agree more. This game makes you feel like the ultimate badass. Not only does it feel incredible, it runs butter smooth and has some of the best mechanics in a FPS ever! Loved every minute of this game. The music was also arguably the best I've listened to in years as well.

Whilst the recent Wolfenstein games were amazing, Doom took it up a notch and delivered one of my all time favorite shooters and my GOTY for 2016. The fast and fluid 60 fps game play, brilliant animation and art style, a soundtrack that complimented the game play in a way not many soundtracks have done before and amazing level design that never felt restrictive and offered some nice rewards for those willing to explore. Multiplayer sucking arse wasn't enough to knock it off top spot, Doom has never been a MP game for me so it was a non issue. Not bad for a game i wasn't keen on prior to release and picked up out of boredom.

6. Pokemon Sun/Moon (Nintendo 3DS) - 53 Points

An interesting evolution of Pokemon. A lot of out with the old and in with the new. I don't agree with all of it, but I appreciate the efforts to change it up. The focus on narrative was an interesting turn for the franchise. Probably my 3rd or 4th favourite gen when all is said and done.

5. Titanfall 2 (XB1, PS4 & PC) - 73 Points

Criminally underrated as the most complete SP/MP package of the year. Campaign while brief has some of the most unique and memorable level design in years and the MP is fast-paced, balanced and deep.

Stupidly launched in between the heavy hitters of the FPS genre, Titanfall 2 was a big surprise for me both in it's single player and improvements made to the multiplayer aspect after the disappointing test weekends. For me it has set the tone for what i expect out of a multiplayer focused single player campaign, this wasn't some linear, narrative driven, shooting gallery like what has become the norm for these type of games. No, this was fun from start to finish with levels designed as gigantic playgrounds to compliment the movement of both titan and pilot. the relationship between the characters felt genuine and the story was solid, a great effort considering the first game had no campaign at all. Multiplayer is leagues ahead of CoD in the twitch shooter stakes, get on it.

4. Forza Horizon 3 (XB1 & PC) - 76 Points

forza_horizon_3_main_art_horizontal_big_1.jpg

The most socially acceptable console video game in a very long time. At the work christmas party I was talking to one of my work mates' parters and we don't seem to have much in common but this game broke the ice and we later admitted to being final fantasy and zelda fanboys from way back. Good old FH3. Reminds me back in the late 90's how nerds like me could use Gran Turismo as a cultural touchstone. We'd start banging on about Skylines and gear ratios and shit.

Maloo utes set in Australia, what more needs to be added?

3. Overwatch (XB1, PS4 & PC) - 86 Points

I recently went back to this as I was thinking about games for 2016 and I'm glad that I did. It has given me a great appreciation for the game. Just overflowing with character, everyone has their favourites. Any game that makes people want to play the healers is great and it makes all of the characters feel like they're contributing.

2. Battlefield 1 (XB1. PS4 & PC) - 127 Points

Another surprise. I wasn't really on the bandwagon with this until seeing some positive responses for the single player campaign. I played and finished the campaign, which was surprisingly entertaining despite being fairly short. But it's the multiplayer that has kept me going back. Battlefield 1 is the ultimate team experience of 'war'. It feels so incredible when you're off on your own part of the map in a battle while you have teammates hundreds of metres away fighting their own battle their too and ultimately you're both working towards the same goal of winning the match. This is the best multiplayer experience for 2016, if not the last 10 years!

1. Uncharted 4 (PS4) - 237 Points

maxresdefault_4.jpg

full disclosure, I'm not as rabid a fan of the franchise as a lot are. I enjoyed 1-3 but wasn't quite on board with the hype. This game, though, was exceptional. I even replayed it, which I must say is pretty rare for me. As an experience, this game was second to none for me this year.

easily the best game of the year beautiful setting naughty dog hit it out of the park

The best looking game I played this year and another rollicking adventure with twists and turns, with just the right amout of Crash Bandicoot. If that's really it for the series it's a lovely way to go out. Still have to turn the difficulty down but climbing around ruins and listening to the team talk rubbish is fun enough by itself.

Xcom 2, civ 6 and dark souls deserved more praise and mafia 3 is pretty over rated imo
Agree civ vi is amazing. I just think that being pc exclusive many people didnt get to play it, if they did it is easily top 3.

Man Bigfooty is full of Uncharted fanbois.
Nope, its more that it was a pretty shitty gaming year and Uncharted was definitely the stand out

It's all just a damn popularity contest with you people!

Indie games under represented, which I guess is there nature of indie games...

Yep needs more Firewatch & INSIDE.

Still a very good top 10 overall.

I just bought Doom & Deus Ex today.
Especially excited to try out Doom.

I think it was a far stronger year than 2015.
I suppose it is subjective. However I would say that Witcher 3, MGS V & Fallout 4 were all way better than anything produced in 2016. Then throw in titles like Bloodborne, Rise of Tomb raider, Arkham Knight, Life is Strange, Until Dawn & StarCraft and I think there is no comparison

Yeah it is subjective i guess.
Thinking on it i probably didn't remember the year as fondly as i don't have a PS4 so didn't get to play those exclusives yet.
Haven't got around to The Witcher 3 yet either as i haven't finished Witcher 2.

With the games i have played though i would rank it below 2016.
Games like Forza Horizon 3, INSIDE, Dishonored 2, Firewatch, Titanfall 2 etc. were more memorable than anything i played that year.

I found it very very hard to do a top 10 list this year.
I could have swapped in about 5-6 that were my #1.

Last year I guess there was really the Witcher 3 as an obvious choice, with the #2 spot being a bit harder to decide.

Both been good years, and I've been playing a lot of catch up with games this generation, so there certainly isn't a lack of choice.

I reckon ps+ and xbLive have killed the indies a little, seeing indies are a major player in the free games these days most people either hold out for it or are indied out from the amount they get. I know i dont buy close to what i used to, and truthfully that wasn't a lot to begin with.

I also bought DOOM as a result of seeing such positive reviews in the voting thread and it is absolutely freakon phenomenal!

One of those games where the gameplay is pure bliss and nothing feels like a chore. Best single player I've played in years and I think I'm only about half way through.

Do yourself a favour and get playing Witcher 3 asap. One of the greatest games you will ever play

2015 waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay >>>>>>>>>>> 2016. It's not even a contest in my opinion. Witcher 3, Life is Strange, Tales from the Borderlands, Rocket League, Until Dawn and Dying Light would all probably make the top ten of a cumulative list for mine, with the first four all likely in the top five or six.

Haha I just like good writing in video games - feels like CYOA-style games are where the good stories have been lately. Other games haven't really set the bar high of late...

Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Ori and the Blind Forest, Bloodborne & MGSV are all stellar games from 2015 as well.

Currently playing through Far Cry Primal and am surprised it didn't make the top 10 (it was a 2016 game wasnt it?)

Easily my favourite Far Cry game, love the setting and the animals in it.
