3 men go into a motel. The man behind the desk said the room is $30, so each man paid $10 and went into the room.

A while later, the man behind the desk realised the room was only $25, so he sent the bellboy to the room with $5.

On the way, the bellboy couldn’t figure out how to evenly split the $5 between the 3 men, so he gave each man a $1 coin and kept the remaining $2 for himself.

This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room - which only adds up to $27.
Add that to the $2 the bellboy kept = $29.

Where is the other dollar?

It's a false reasoning to expect an extra dollar. The $2 that the bellboy kept should be subtracted from the $27 the 3 men paid, as they should not have paid it.
So the men paid $27, $25 for the room plus $2 that the bellboy kept.

this is an oldie but a goodie. BS is right though, the men did'nt pay $9 for the rooms PLUS the bellboy. they paid $8.33 each for the rooms plus the $2 the bellboy ($0.66 each)

in essence, the hotel has $25, the bellboy $2, and the guests $1 each, after starting with a total of $30, they finish with $30. still, you hav to think a bit if you word the question the right way.

Here's the maths:

A/B=C where A is room cost, B is the number of men and C is the cost per man. Substituting the numbers gives $30/3=$10.

Now A becomes $25 and thus the equation becomes $25/3=$8.33.

Now add $1 to C which gives $9.33. Multiply by 3 which gives $28. The thieving little bellboy pockets the $2.

It's probably already been said, but anyway... The $2 the bellboy has came from the $27 the men paid.

So you're counting that $2 twice.

that makes more sense to me than the A B C = stuff... :p

The $2 he kept was a tip, so it equals $31 actually if you include all the tips from that day. This was also because there was a train leaving New York at 2.33AM which he had to catch, this train was travelling at 25km/hr, but he needed the $2 really badly.

Here's the big one.

Round them up to $8.35 and $0.65 respectively...

Would that still work out?

What the hell were the 3 men doing in the hotel room???

I think they bought the bellboy's silence with that $2.

He wont stay quiet for long with $2. He will eventually run out of drugs and need money.. the demands will come.
