Help! Java Virtual Machine

I need help badly.
I have Windows XP now and whenever I try to go to certain chats or use geocities for making web pages it says I need the Jave Virtual Machine. Fogive me as I am not up with all the tech talk.
I tired downloading the Service Pack 1 as suggested on the Microsoft website as this supposedly fixes the prob, however it wont download properly. So then I tried downloading a verison of the machine from Sun....that didn't work either.
Any ideas?

I also have a question.

With Microsoft Outlook on XP, when I load it up, Microsoft Office XP kicks in and Word asks me if I want to configure the speech options and microphone. I have no microphone therefore I cannot and don't want to, but it asks me to every time I use Outlook. How do I stop this? Do I have to break some link that Outlook and Microsoft Office XP (or Word to be specific) have to get rid of it?

I believe you can download it from download.com...

Simply install it then restart your computer and maybe reinstall internet explorer, then the changes should take affect and java applets etc. should work.

Did you have a problem downloading the file from Sun, or did the downloaded file simply not work?

Try going to this page. If you click on the purple button it should download and install the VM automatically, if you click "yes" when you get the security warning. Otherwise, follow the manual download link and follow the bouncing ball. One of these should work.

Apologies if you've tried this. It worked fine for my copy of XP Pro.

I used the link to Sun and then manually downloaded which worked fine. I did the auto one last time and it didn't work but now I am A ok!
