How does the WSOP work?

Stupid quesiton. How does the WSOP work. Is it just a series of tournaments in Las Vegas over a week and the bracelet winners progress to the finals?

They are all separate events.

This year's WSOP ran for nearly 2 months.

The Main Event alone went for almost 2 weeks.

As with every set of poker tournaments, there are a set of preliminary events, and then a "Main Event". Think of it like a boxing card. Though with the WSOP, all the preliminary events are considered more prestigious than ordinary preliminary events, and many are "World Championship" events for the main poker variants played - thus gathering the best players in the world.

Anyone can buy in for any event. The higher the buy in, the more prestigious the tournament, generally.
