In an even bigger shock, apparently Ronnie Irani's place in the English one-day squad is in question - we'll see about that.

But England deserve what they get as usual - their "planning" for the WC was a mess. About two years ago they apparently were building the nucleus of the side for the WC, but the nucleus was never allowed to develop and as usual they went for knee-jerk responses like picking Steve Harmison in the WC squad (even though he's not even a regular one-day bowler for his county side), who didn't play a game.

Ronnie Irani was obviously a disaster, and I still don't know why they didn't pick Graeme Hick in their squad. He wasn't up to it at Test level but he was still a fine one-day player and significantly more talented then bits-and-pieces players like Blackwell and Irani. He should've been picked.

Not a huge surprise really. Nasser Hussain wasn't too happy with how the ECB handled the whole Zimbabwe thing and when you start to feel that you aren't being supported by your board, that's when you have a problem as a Captain.

Yes, that was the real reason. You should have heard him after the ECB apologised for his behaviour to Mal Speed - he was livid. Wouldn't be surprised if he steps down from the Test Captaincy as well.

Question is who replaces him?

He said at the press conference where he annouced this that he would like to continue his test career and reach his goal of playing 100 tests, so that's a couple of more years longer he'll be playing.

Also, I guess Trescophiwhatever takes over as captain. Or if he continues with his shabby form, Vaughan will be there man.

So his ODI career is finished. He was only getting a came because he was captain.
The Poms would be better to play someone like Owais Shah, instead of Nasser Insane.

Was he born in England?

Geez, just imagine what Hick would have done to some of the trundlers, he eats that stuff for brekky in the County Championship.

We always knew it was on the cards. Think about the previous captains that have resigned (especially after a series against Australia). England cricket is in dire trouble and the sport needs looking at over there. They need to get a side together that will be around in 4 years time to reap the rewards. Aussie cricket was in the same dilemma in 1985 and look what Border did to the side he took over and led them to the WC in 1987 and then the ultimate trophy in 1989.

England may have invented the game, but the Aussies refined it.

Was his bottom lip quivering when he resigned?
An insipid leader.
Guess their next leader will be decided over a dart game at the local while having a pint.

I think either Michael Vaughan or Marcus Trescothick should take over as captain. Preferrably Vaughan.

Agreed, our captain should also be our best player, therefore I say choose Michael Vaughan.

owais Shah was born in India i believe.
i just checked. he was born in Pakistan! He'd fit right into the ODI team.

Loads of experience: 15 games
Great Batting Average: 21.76

He'll add a lot to the English team. At least he's a young prospect (24), i'll grant him that much.

Rubbish! There's enough Australians, South Africans, Zimbabweans, Indians, Pakistanis, and West Indians around not good enough to play for their own country that I'm sure will be picked to play for England in the years to come. Heck, some of them might even be made captain!

The wrong Hussein quit ;)

I really can't see what this does to better English cricket. Who really deserves the captaincy, and who has the potential to mould the squad into positive thinking winners? Sure, could give it to Vauhgan, but that would probably stifle any potential he has.

Knowing the Poms, they'll probably give it to Stewart :D

They did in the WC game that Nasser missed & Threscothik was lessed than impressed he was over looked. He was told he would captain the side, but they changed it on the morning of the game.
