Between 1995 and 2006 the only time both Melbourne and the team we played in round one have made the eight was in 2000,

ie last year we lost to Carlton, they finished last, in 05 we beat Essendon who finished 13th, in 04 we lost to Hawthorn who then finished 15th, in 03 we beat Hawthorn and we finished 14th.

So is this trend set to continue or will it be the Saints, the Dees or both who miss the 8 this year.

EDIT: Richmond didn't make the 8 in 2000, so the trend goes all the way back to 1994.

And what a squad of luminaries that was. Chisholm! Cook! Grgic!

Sadly doesn't top my favourite Rd. 1 team of all time a year earlier. Kowal! Lamb! Ottens! and Troy Longmuir kicking 0.5. Yet somehow we won

Richmond finished 9th in 2000.

You're thinking of Geelong who finished 5th, then lost to Hawthorn in the Elimination Final.

And I am dead certain we played Richmond in Round 1 that year. We lost by 2 points at night at the MCG.

Richmond, since losing the 1982 Grand Final have made the finals just twice (1995 and 2001 - both times losing the Preliminary Final). 2 finals series in 25 years. Go Tiges!

I should have remembered those games.
Whoever new that wikipedia could be wrong!
If the rest of my research is correct (good chance it isn't), that means that since 1994, either Melbourne and/or the team we played in round one have missed the 8, so lets hope the saints don't make it this year.

It's really interesting I was watching a press conference from the demons hotter than hell video 1998 Danihers 1st year of coaching. Now my major problem with Daniher is that he doesn't take enough risks and try different things. Maybe not so much today but what bout in 2000,2002 pretty much every year when Melbourne was against the ropes chuck Neita further up the ground.

Anyway in this video I think he was talking bout Melbourne V Essendon r22 for us to secure a top4 finish he chuck Garry Lyon into the middle and he made a match winning smother and clearance. In the interview Neale is quoted as saying 'when yoru under pressure you look to your champions and try different things". Alot has changed his mindset.
