I don't have a link to show the article, but I could have sworn I had seen somewhere that G-Train has, in essence, retired and we are only keeping him on the list for a relatively unknown reason, such as in case the whole forward line falls down a well, or so he can keep getting the medical attention he needs under insurance, or something along those lines.

But more recently his name keeps popping up in threads about making a return to the side for the finals, or for even still being on the list next season.

If memory serves me correctly, he was quoted as conceding that the game has gone past him for pace, ability to defend the forward 50, etc.

It takes a big man to admit that you can no longer cut it, and his performances this year, injured or otherwise, would suggest he has nothing left to give.

G has been a tremendous servant to the club, but don't we need to move on?
What are the chances he'll still be on the list next year?

Frase was being interviewed before the Cats game. When asked if he would be playing finals this year , he said something along the lines of " only if the team bus explodes on the way to the game"
He is helping coach the forwards, and as such has plenty of work.

even more confusing then that people seem to offer his name as a replacement / inclusion

I have no problem with him being at the club to help out others, he seems to like the place

How would he feel about being part of a trade to WC for Kerr then? :D

I don't think bringing in a rookie against a tough Collingwood outfit would be the answer for the forward line. May as well stick with Gardiner, as I can't see Allen brought in for anyone else

The only rookie I'd like to see is Armitage, and that would probably then be rookie for rookie (ie. Eddy out)

Yeah , my statement above is my opinion about why other people are suggesting these things. But I agree with you. All the young guys/old fringe players have had their chances during 2008 without making any remarkable impression ( Except Birss who has been stiffed, but he wasn't a game saver). Finals are too late for radical list changes, and we need to rely on the current playing group to get it together.

Does anyone else wish we had recruited Chris Dawes instead of Brad Howard?

Yes, the G-train is finished at AFL level. There is nobody they want to promote off the rookie list that can slot straight into the senior team. By memory, they did not replace the G-train with a rookie, so technically he could of returned to the senior team anytime.

Just there for insurance, just in case major injuries took hold.

... and we may as well hold on to him around the forwards as a coach. Looks as though he won't play again but it's a good sign for the club that we are retaining ex players to help with the current crop as traditionally I believe that we have had a few "problems" doing so as well as the well (over) documented lack of support for ex-players from the club.
