James Bartel

West Coast has emerged as favorite to secure disgruntled Geelong onballer James Bartel, who looks set to leave the Cats after 2 years & 24 games.

The Eagles are rumoured to be keen to find a hard-working ball winner to add more grunt to their speedy midfield combination of Ben Cousins, Chas Fletcher, Daniel Kerr & Chris Judd.

Bartel has so far refused to sign with the Cats and there is mounting speculation that he is keen to find a new home. Carlton has also expressed interest.

If Bartel does head West, expect Eagle forward David Haynes to be part of the mix. Haynes, formerly from Warrnambool, played for the Geelong Falcons and is the hard working forward the Cats need.

Not sure whether there is much truth to it, but if there is, it would be a good deal for both clubs.

It definitely wouldn't be a straight swap, as i think both clubs supporters would expect a draft pick to be thrown in.

Didn't really think the Eagles would be chasing Bartel but I think a swap for Haynes would be good.

Haynes is a leading forward, and thumping kick who played virtually the whole season at FF. Fell away in the latter half of the year but 2003 was still by far his best year in the AFL. He kicked a few goals this season (27) and also kicked a few out of bounds on the full underlining the fact although he is a worker he hasn't mastered the art of the straight punt drop in front of goal.

Seems to be a Woosha favourite though but Bartel seems to be quality and may go for it. Midfielders are not exactly our no. 1 priority but you'd always go for quality and I think Bartel would be that for us (and Haynes would be a walk-up for the Cats). Who knows could all be written by the alter ego of Inside Informer for all we know.

On the issue of draft picks I would swap them straight up. Knowing this Geelong fans will know probably want a 2nd rounder to which I would say thanks but no thanks.

this might be a good trade but i don't see us trading Haynes and securing Bartel would probably raise questions as to why we even bothered trading Williams for Adkins ?

I hope you're comparing Haynes to Williams, rather than Bartel to Adkins.

i actually think that it would be a very fair swap. why do draft picks always have to be thrown in.

Sorry, don't rate Bartel that much.

Haynes has been good this year whereas Bartel has been up and down in and out. Bartel is younger (and drafted higher - not by much) but Haynes is a young tall forward and they don't grow on trees. I can see why you'd want him playing next to Rawlings next year They'd go alright I reckon.

I assumed that Eagles fans would rate Haynes higher, and i know Geelong supporters rate Bartel incredibly higher.

The clubs probably value them similarly, but supporters of both clubs would probably expect something to be thrown in.

Why is that?

Personally i'm not a fan, but he has enormous talent, and when given an opportunity, has really impressed.

He has averaged about 15 touches a game over his short career, which is as good as any kid, but when you take into account the fact that he struggles to get more than half a game, it is extraordinary.

His record so far compares favourably to EVERY midfielder on our list. His first two years were better than Ling, Corey, Enright and Spriggs' first two.

To be honest I haven't watched hours of geelong games in the last two years but what I have seen I have been alterating between impressed and wondering if the guy is even playing.

I'm suprised that he averages 15 possessions a game - seems higher than what I would've thought. For every 18-20 possession game I've seen there is a 6 possession game. You can expect that in a young footballer I except that but I wouldn't part with Haynes a young, ready made forward PLUS a third round pick in exchange for Bartel. Straight up I reckon it's a fair trade, but the pick makes it very unappealing to me.

I'd be wrapped with Haynes + 3rd rd for Bartel.

Bartel is the makings of a gun midfielder. I remember the first half of the 2002 season he was having, at that stage as good as any. Still very young (19??), and if he's willing, I'd love him in the eagles midfield.

Also just quickly, those WCE supporters who think Haynes for Bartel straight swap is fair are overrating Haynes a bit. Don't think David has the abilities to be anything better than an average player. AFL material, but nothing more than average.

Just had a look, he actually averages about 12-13 touches a game.

To be fair, he has only played 3 full games in his career. In those, he got 28 touches, 21 and 19.

He struggled to get more than one quarter of game time this year, basically because Thompson is unhappy with the defensive side of his game.

If you were able to work out his stats/playing time ratio, you'd find it compares favourably with almost every young midfielder in the league.

The guy is a ball magnet, of the Greg Williams mould.

I'd trade Haynes for Bartel straight up if the Cats were willing but if they wanted more I probably wouldn't bother due to the amount of midfielders at the club. At a stretch maybe a 3rd round pick, but we could use that else where too so you never know.

Both are good players, Haynes probably just doesn't quite fit the Eagles and if Bartel is on his way out, I could see it happening.

On Williams-Adkins, lets face it, Andrew Williams was going no where at the Eagles and Adkins was struggling at the Pies, it was probably worth a shot.
I don't think we will be burnt too bad by this one in the future - at the business end of the season once again Williams is gone and as for Adkins, he's got talent, probably would need the likes of Braun, Banfield and Judd to go down for him to get a red hot go though.

By no means am i underating Bartel though i do think that he would struggle to break into the side therefore may be better of at another club.

we see the likes of Chambers, Adkins, Humm & even Joshie wooden struggle at times to break into the 22,
hes 2 talented to be a fringe player in my view

I'd rank Bartel above the four you've mentioned there Clayton. He may need some more developing but I wouldn't think it'd take him long to pass those blokes.

We do want to hold on to him. An offer has been on the table for months.

Bartel is unhappy because of his lack of opportunities, thus wants to go to a club who can guarantee him a midfield role.

His ball-winning ability is superb, he reads the play extremely well, and his kicking is special, however he doesn't do enough on the defensive side of the ball.

If he could work a bit harder, i have no doubt that he'd become a top 10 midfielder.

I'd love Bartel at West Coast. I've seen a few of his first games with Geelong and i rate him quite highly.

I'd take Bartel for Haynes straight up
