Retired Jarryn Geary

Geary is definitely the front runner for the captaincy and rightly so. Whenever the coaches and players talk about him, you can see how highly rated he is internally and his training/game day performances reflect that. The Geelong game last year provided some great insight when they mic'd him up so we could hear him not only directing the young players but the older players as well.

We're probably not going to find out who our next captain is any time soon and everyone has their own opinion on who it should be, but it's ultimately up to the players to make the decision. Nick is a hard act to follow (what an understatement) but whoever it is will have my full support, whether that's Geary or someone else.

Oh s**t, I didn't even know this players board even existed - I'm still learning the ropes of BigFooty haha, I'll be sure to post all media reports on Jarryn in here from now on instead of ranting on the St. Kilda thread when defending him :p

Hmm I hadn't even considered that some newer users may not have actually noticed the Players forum. Perhaps I should make a post/get an announcement for us.

St Kilda Captain Jarryn Geary has secured his second consecutive podium finish in the Trevor Barker Award.

After finishing narrowly behind Jack Steven in last year’s vote count, the 29-year-old capped a consistent season with third place behind Seb Ross and Dylan Roberton.

In a year where he took over the leadership reins from the club’s longest serving skipper, Nick Riewoldt, Geary continued to strengthen his status as one of the competition’s premier small defenders.

He polled in all but two games in 2017, with one of those matches coming in Round 23 when he was injured very early in the opening term against the Demons.

With Riewoldt, Leigh Montagna and Sean Dempster all departing the club this year, Geary is a key driver behind St Kilda’s pursuit of a return to September.

Where he polled his votes:

Round 4 v Collingwood (15 votes) – 17 disposals, nine spoils, seven marks and five tackles

Rd 13 v North Melbourne (10 votes) – 21 disposals, eight contested possessions and three spoils

Rd 16 v Richmond (10 votes) – 18 disposals, seven marks, six contested possessions and four spoils

Rd 19 v Port Adelaide (nine votes) – 12 disposals, six contested possessions and six spoils
