Real sliding door moment and wonder if Saints would have jumped had Paddy and Robbo got through last week unscathed.

Lets hope we've got a gold nugget here.

St Kilda Football Club has added Jonathon Marsh to its playing list as part of the Supplemental Selection Period.

The decision to enlist the 23-year-old defender came after the club opted to place draftee Jack Bytel on the long-term injury list as he recovers from back surgery.


General Manager of Football Simon Lethlean said Marsh would bolster the Saints backline for the 2019 season.

“We’re really excited to add Jonathon to our playing list,” Lethlean said.

“Following two seasons with East Fremantle in the WAFL, Jonathon moved back to Melbourne with his partner late last year with the express purpose of reigniting his AFL career.


“He has been training with Richmond’s VFL team throughout the pre-season and looked impressive as part of the Tigers’ senior intra-club game a few weeks ago.

“With the recent injuries to Jake Carlisle and Oscar Clavarino, Jonathon adds to our depth and importantly is someone we think is ready to play if required."

Marsh previously spent three seasons at Collingwood Football Club before moving home to Western Australia at the end of 2016.

Most of you will have seen this by now but a great first interview from Marsh - he appears to be very well spoken and absolutely stoked to have been given another crack. I think his enthusiasm will be infectious amongst the playing group and will hopefully lift the spirits after this morning's dreadful news about Robbo.

Marsh is extremely quick, running the 20 metre sprint in 2.78 seconds at the draft combine in 2013. This is the equal second fastest time ever recorded, something made all the more impressive by the fact that he is almost 4 inches taller than only player to ever run it quicker (Joel Wilkinson 2010, 2.75sec). This will surely give us some wonderful rebound pace off half back. At 194cm and 87kg, Marsh should be able to hold his own against many KPFs, but may be out of his depth against the larger forwards. Of course, barring significant injury to the likes of Brown, Austin and Joyce, I don't think it will really be his role as he seems much more suited to a third/loose intercepting defender role.

Unfortunately, the WAFL don't seem to post detailed stats beyond the basic ones, so his impact for East Freo last season is difficult to quantify statistically. In saying that, during his 10 game stint Collingwood in 2016, Marsh ended the season 3rd among rising stars for both one percenters per game and intercepts per game, with his season average for these stats 37th and 45th overall in the league, respectively. Not a bad effort for a <20 game player.

Marsh was another beacon for the Sharks in 2018. His on-field presence as a leader and dominant player have been evident all year. Playing predominately down back this year, Marsh has held some of the competition’s best scoreless – his skills evident with his selection in the WAFL State side.

Have to say, Marsh sounds very promising and it's a shame he didn't get a run in the JLT. Absolutely one to keep an eye on, and hopefully there'll be more to update the thread on soon.

One last thing, he appears to be rocking a long sleeved guernsey in heaps of his Pies highlights. Would love to have a regular long-sleeve guernsey back at the Saints, it's been a few years since Milney!
 
I have genuine hopes this kid grabs his 2nd chance at AFL and runs with it.
Would love to see us pick him up at end of year if he shows plenty in 2019.

“A bit of Marsh up forward was solid in the second quarter. That was the idea, just get a little bit of contest and threaten as to whether we equalise at times [when kicking with the wind]. We held our nerve a little bit and we were able to generate that run from half-back from Hind and Coffield with Marsh up forward. We’re always wary about whether or not we equalise, but Marshy was clearly getting it done up [forward] and also did well down back, so we had the best of both worlds which was good for us.”
 
Jonathon Marsh’s AFL comeback story could be complete if the big defender is called up, and both his height and ability to swing forward could come in handy against a tall Giants setup.

Jonathon Marsh was desperate to make it back to the AFL.
And when he got his chance as an SSP selection, he seized it with both hands.
The ex-Magpie was tried up forward in his first game, experiencing an inspiring one-goal return before moving back to his regular home in defence.
Marsh played five games for the Saints, but was a strong leader for Sandringham through his commitment to the contest and marshalling of the defence.
They’ll be traits he’ll be hoping to carry into 2020 – primarily in red, white and black.
BEST GAME:
His first ever goal against GWS was Marsh’s most memorable moment, but his most influential game against Carlton in Round 10 after collecting 12 disposals, four rebounds and four marks.
