Imagine if you said this would happen at the start of the season? Even the few believers wouldn't have predicted this.

Don't be discouraged by his slowish second half of the season, delivery was putrid and he was still getting to plenty of contests but just spilled some marks. We've got an absolute gun. Well done Brucey!

A fantastic achievement that I'm sure not many would have predicted before the start of the season.

I remember being at my cousin's house when we played the Suns in round 2 so I had to check the scores on my phone... imagine my reaction when I saw 'Goal scored by Josh Bruce' over and over again!

I'll tell you what, a forward line of Bruce, McCartin and Membrey with guys like Lonie, Sinclair and Billings buzzing around their feet... very exciting times ahead.

He's been one of the highlights of the year for me.

Shame he dropped off towards the end of the season but to kick 50 goals as a back up forward is a great effort.

Hoping he can put in a big pre-season and become a regular full forward for us, his set goal kicking and ability to kick goals off the floor are A grade.

I'm not sure it was just fitness for the reason he dropped off either, he seemed down to me and didn't have the spark he had early on in the season.

I hope we have good psychologists and mental health workers at our club, like everyone else our players are vulnerable to the ups and downs of life.

Would not have picked that before the season.. In fact I thought he was deemed not to have a future with us if we weren't prepared to play him back because I didn't think he was good enough as a forward..

How wrong I was his first half was incredible.. Just lost confidence or maybe burnt out second half .. Dropped a lot of simple marks..

His field kicking is still a worry for mine but he's learning the craft and learning his own game.. Should only build from this.. Hopefully no more of him as back up ruck and just let him stay forward

Go Brucey you good thing.

Now spend some of that prize money on a decent hairdo!!!!;)

The commentators were saying that this is something like the 12th season in a row that St Kilda have had a player kick 50 goals or more. Pretty impressive when you consider our ups and downs in that time period, and the fact that only 9 players managed it this year.

Immensely happy with Josh's breakout this year. I really hope it wasn't just a flash in the pan season, and that he can back it up and even improve on it next season. Probably his best games were while Riewoldt was out of the side, or was severely out of form, so that should mean that as the players trust him more and use him more, he'll only improve.

Besides Armo, probably the best individual season of any of our players, and our most improved by the length of his hair.

An amazing effort and completely unexpected.

Took a bit of a turn after the bye though, imo didn't work hard enough to get himself into the game and was costly when the ball did come to him.. If he didn't mark it, he would get beaten on his second efforts and allow far too easy rebounds.

To be fair, he was thrown in the deep end, as a young KPF with the worst delivery in the league, and 1-2 defenders scragging him at every aerial contest. I just think he was a little bit of a liability in the second half of the season, and i found myself being frustrated more than I was happy with him.. Another full pre-season and advice from roo will help that.

He still has awesome goal sense which can't be taught!!

The thing to note here is that from every season from 2002 to now we've had someone kick at least 49 goals in a season, before this year all of those seasons belonged to Fraser Gehrig, Stephen Milne and Nick Riewoldt.

Bruce is the first St Kilda player who is not one of those three to kick 50 goals in a season since Jason Heatley and Stewart Loewe did it in 1997.

kosi never broke the 50?

But when you look it like that, it's a mighty effort

Wow. Great stat.

Wow. Great stat.

I saw an AFL.com.au article regarding , the players each club must hang on to.
It included Cloke , Hawkins, and Jack Riewoldt.
Get to StKilda no mention of Bruce, but i think he kicked more goals than Hawkins or Cloke, probably with worse supply.

You'd have to think as St Kilda's younger players get better the delivery will improve. There will be teething problems with moving away from a Riewoldt-centric game style, but in the second half of the year Bruce was getting double teamed while also primarily being picked up by the best defender. Alex Rance went to Bruce and not Riewoldt when we played Richmond.

And that double teaming in turn won't happen when Paddy and Members are big enough threats in their own right that they demand close attention from defenders. Drop a resting ruck and quality smalls (Lonie + resting mid/Billings/Montagna/Sinclair) around them and that's a great set up.
