Welcome to the mighty Sainters, Josh! :thumbsu:

Josh has serious speed and looks like he uses it to advantage really well, to break clear of traffic and into space. Reminds me a lot of Nathan Foley, when he burst onto the scene a few years ago, with the way he plays. Apparently Josh finished the season off really well and is coming from a long way back, due to having more of an athletics background, possibly. Can apparently play both inside and outside and has that rare combination of both outstanding speed (sub 3 seconds over 20m) and terrific endurance (14+ on the beep test).

Reportedly spent a lot of this year playing school footy for Geelong College, but also played some games with the Falcons, in the TAC Cup (averaging 23 possies and 5 tackles per game) and made the Vic Country team for the champs, where he played 3 games.

Club: Geelong Falcons
DOB: 31/08/1994Height:183cmWeight: 88kgPosition: Midfielder

Medium midfielder/defender with terrific run & carry. Tested very well at State Draft Combine with 14.10 beep and 2.96sec 20m Sprint.

Head recruiter Tony Elshaug on Saunders:“He really improved in the second half of the season. He played on the inside in the midfield, played on a wing, had a very good finals series. He is a very determined young man and can really carry the ball. He has good speed and endurance. He is a good person who tested well at the combine and runs hard from start to finish.”

This was also Tweeted about him: "Geelong Falcons@GeelongFalcons
The coaches award went to Josh Saunders who finished the year really well and improved his understanding of the game immensely…"

Meet the Recruits - Josh Saunders

From Inside Football:
"Josh has a tremendous mix of speed and endurance. He is a Geelong College boy so we haven't had him every week, but he's developed nicely and capped that off by playing in the state program. Plays on the outside, but can play inside if needed, but generally we used him on the outside to give us run and speed away from the contest. He can go onto a wing and I think he's a genuine chance to get drafted because of his speed." (Andrew Allthorpe, who coached him at the Geelong Falcons this year)

Here is what Footy Tragic had to say about him, in his mock draft (he had him going at 40):

JOSH SAUNDERS

Height: 182cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 31/8/1994

Recruited from: Geelong Falcons

Saunders is a favourite of mine. He doesn’t come with a lot fan fare, but he’s a very nice inside midfielder from the Geelong Falcons.
He played 12 games this season averaging 23 disposals at a really healthy 70% efficiency along with 5 tackles a game.

He didn’t test at the Combine, and I don’t have the Screening results, but he seems to be able to run all day and have some nice toe.

Yeah I'm really excited by the prospect of him playing for us as well. Seemed to do perfectly well this year, particularly late, but by the sounds of it is coming from a long way back and may not have played a heap of footy, going by some of the comments above, so could have significant scope for improvement.

May also still be growing, too. Was listed at 180cm on the Falcons website earlier in the year, yet has been listed at 182cm since the combine, so could end up a really good height for someone with his speed. Is already two inches taller than Nathan Foley, who his style of play has been likened to.

Josh Saunders

Games: 10
Disposals: 9.8
Tackles: 2.6

A lot of Saints fans would've been a bit surprised when his name was called out with pick 43 in the draft as he wasn't on many peoples radar, but one look at his draft highlights video and you quickly saw why he was chosen:

Josh was a bit of a late comer to footy as his background was mostly athletics, so not surprisingly the thing that really stands out when watching Saunders is that he has a serious set of wheels and likes to use them, as does his attack on the ball and the man with it. Early on there were comparisons to guys like Foley, Swan and even our very own Jack Steven. He tested very well at the combine showing he has the rare combination of elite speed and high endurance. Also seems to have a real "zippiness" about him in traffic as once he gets the ball it's hard to even lay a finger on him.

Josh started off the season in good form for Sandringham and earned a call up for his debut game against Sydney on ANZAC day, coming on as the sub and having 6 disposals in what was a pretty dour affair in New Zealand followed by a 9 disposal game and a shot or two on goal in his first full match against Collingwood. One issue Josh had was consistency as he would usually play a solid game showing us the kind of potential he had which would be followed by a game where you had a hard time noticing he was out there which isn't uncommon for a 19 year old.

His standout games would've been round 15 against Fremantle and round 20 against Hawthorn, with the Freo game being slightly better as that game had more on the line for longer. Over there he collected 17 disposals (most of them in the first half before tiring) and kicked a goal while showing some real star potential, displaying a touch of class to go along with his attack on the ball and his usual dash. Against Hawthorn he had 11 touches and unfortunately a goal taken away from an awful umpiring decision, but what would be burnt into a lot of Saints fans is a couple of blistering runs. The first one was a breakaway run from half back down the middle of the ground to hit Roo on the chest, the second one was from another handball receive where he glanced at Bradley Hill and took off down the middle of the ground with the kick just missing the intended target. That sort of confidence from a 19 year old is pretty rare.

In saying all of that it was one act against Port where he really earnt the respect of Saints fans as he went back with the flight of the ball without flinching and got crunched. After the game he brushed it off saying it was his turn to go and to make sure he works hard on the track to get a game next week.

All in all it was a solid debut season for Saunders showing Saints fans that they should be very excited about this young guy, and personally I wouldn't be surprised to see his career go on a similar path to what Steven's has which was.. we'll say "hinted" by his coach in a press conference. Still plenty of improvement left in this hard working youngster and when he puts it all together it should be a sight to behold.

My man is starting the year nicely, not even setting a PB but still finishing 4th is a great start and I'm really thinking he can play 18+ games this year with the potenital he has

Here's what the 2015 Champion Data Prospectus had to say about Saunders:

Playing as a defensive forward he exhibited strong pressure skills, tanking 2nd at the club for pressure acts per game and elite amongst general forwards for both pressure acts and tackles.

He failed to get involved offensively, ranking 16th at the club for score involvements with just 3 per match, despite spending 71% of his time forward.

In the VFL he averaged 104 CD ranking points, 24 disposals, 3 tackles and 4 clearances per game.

2015 the year for the Saunders

@TrueZebras: Josh Saunders kicks a much needed goal for the Zebras and they trail Port Melbourne by 87 points at the start of the last quarter. #PJVFL
