Judd ready to explode
http://sportal.com.au/AFL-news-display/judd-ready-to-explode-67116
Carlton captain Chris Judd may be reluctant to declare himself in career-best condition, but believes his 'explosiveness' has been significantly enhanced by his hard work in the weight room over the summer.
Judd said his general fitness is far more advanced than this time last year when he was still effectively in rehab following groin surgery.
Now able to move freely, Judd is looking forward to setting new personal standards in terms of getting from zero to top speed where it counts most, out on the field on match day.
"The last two years I haven't been able to do any meaningful leg weights," Judd said at the AFL Captains' gathering at Etihad Stadium.
"This year I've been able to have a go at them and that's less a remedial thing and more about power and actually hitting full speed and full strength."
Asked if he was in best-ever shape, Judd said he had some catching up to do after last year's groin-related interruptions.
"You almost forget where you're at from year to year," he said.
"It sounds strange, but putting together two, three, four big pre-seasons on the back of one another is where you get to the stage where you're in peak shape."
Judd said he was genuinely surprised that all 15 rival AFL captains in the pre-season captains' survey nominated the Blues to make this year's final eight.
"Playing for Carlton you've got to balance up the fact that we're enthusiastic and really hopeful of having a good season, but you're also got to be realistic that we haven’t played finals for a very long time," he said.
"It’s a bit of a compliment that the other captains thought we would make the eight, but essentially we've got a long way to go and aren’t looking too much past next Thursday."
Quizzed on the progress of fellow Brownlow Medalist and former West Coast team-mate Ben Cousins, Judd said he'd been in touch recently and expects to get up-close and personal when the Blues and Tigers clash in next Thursday's season opener.
"The focus won't be on him from our points of view … we're focusing on the entire Richmond footy club side," said Judd.
"But the way teams are zoning now, a lot of the time you're not on any one player for long periods of time so there's every possibility that we'll play on each other for a while and it'll be exciting."
