The former West Coast Eagle, who won his first Brownlow Medal six years ago, reaffirmed that message today, saying the battles that people like Jim Stynes face "are real battles".

"They are life and death situations and hence a lot more inspiring than what takes place on the field," he said.

"The (make believe) comment was probably along the lines of what footballers do isn't actually life and death. Sometimes people make the comparison with war and football (but) they're so completely different . . .

"What football is to me is a chance for you to announce to the opposition and the public what type of person you and your team mates are and you get to do that each week when you take the field."
