The fast starting Justin Koschitzke

St Kilda picked Justin Koschitzke with the No. 2 selection at the 2000 National Draft, he was 196 centimetres tall and weighed 82 kilograms when drafted as an 18 year old. Koschitzke grew up in the New South Wales country town of Brocklesby and was recruited from the Murray Bushrangers Under 18s, he gained All-Australian selection at the 2000 AFL Under 18 Championships. His profile in AFL 2001 said “Koschitzke is a tall, mobile key position player who should waste little time settling into AFL football.”1

Koschitzke was named an emergency for the first two rounds of the 2001 season and made his AFL debut in Round 3 against the West Coast Eagles at Colonial Stadium, he played the remaining 20 games of the season in a variety of roles although mainly at centre half-back. Koschitzke showed great composure, was a terrific mark and had 16 or more possessions in seven games including a season high of 21 possessions comprised of 13 kicks and eight handballs in Round 17 against Geelong, he also took eight marks and received 3 Brownlow Medal votes. Koschitzke finished the season very strongly and took seven or more marks in six of his last eight games. Justin received a Rising Star nomination for his performance in Round 14 against Brisbane.

In 2001 Koschitzke played 20 matches averaging 6.9 kicks, 4.8 handballs and 4.5 marks per game with a disposal efficiency of 87.6%. Koschitzke was ranked fifth at St Kilda for marks and contested marks and finished ninth in St Kilda’s best and fairest. Koschitzke was superb in his debut season and won the 2001 Rising Star award with 31 votes, four ahead of West Coast’s Daniel Kerr.

Ruck concern for Saints

ST KILDA will be forced to rely on its young big men in the opening rounds of the year with news its two most-experienced ruckmen will be missing for at least the first month of the AFL season.
After last week placing veteran ruckman Michael Gardiner on the long-term injury list - knowing he won't be available for senior action until at least Round 6 - the Saints are also preparing to be without Justin Koschitzke for a prolonged period.

Koschitzke had ankle surgery during the summer after injuring the joint last season.

While St Kilda elite performance manager Dave Misson said the goalkicker was "going well", his slow progress means youngster Ben McEvoy will be forced to shoulder much of the load as the Grand Finalist of the past two years attempt to go one better in 2011.

"Kosi probably won't play until after the bye (in Round 4), AFL wise, but he might play a couple of Sandy games before then," Misson said.

I think thats more to do with his arms rather than his ankle.

That would've been very Godzilla like

Justin Koschitzke

We all wish every year that it will be Kosi's year. He'll shut the haters up and tear a game apart, and everyone will realise just how good the former Rising Star truly is.

2012 was not that year.

He kicked 14 goals in his first 5 matches and looked the goods, his best game coming against an undermanned Hawthorn, booting 5.The loss of McEvoy and Stanley though was very disruptive to his game. From round 7 he struggled, and never really looked as good as he had up until round 6.

Round 21 against Geelong...not much needs to be said about his efforts here. Fair to say really that it was as though we were a player down.

He earned 16 free kicks throughout the season, but gave away 26. A lack of discipline from he and Milne led to pointless 50 metre penalties, sometimes at key stages.

So is Kosi really cooked? It definitely looked that way at times. I had a quick look at what I believe are the four most important areas of his game: how he's kicking, how he's marking, his rucking, and of course goals scored. Did it make things any clearer? Nope.

It's hard for me to get a read on where his career is at for a couple of reasons:
-His role changes according to the ruck/forward situation. I genuinely believe that without our ruck problems this year, he would have taken more marks, and kicked more goals.
-Injuries: Earlier in the year he insisted, like Roo, that his body is feeling better than it has in years. He did play 6 more games than in 2011, but he never really recovered from the dip in performance in the middle of the season. (Not to mention his woeful mobility in later games.)

Some positives: He's been one of the most accurate forwards in the comp this season. To round 9 he had kicked 15.0 (though I do recall one kick sailing out on the full...). He finished with 27 goals; a solid return, but probably doesn't compensate for some of his poorer performances throughout 2012.
He also amassed 37 tackles over the year, his best effort since 2008. I don't know whether this just reflects the evolving role of forwards in the game though.

Overall...I don't know. The numbers suggest he's maintained form from the past two seasons. At times this year he's looked great, and other times he's looked really terrible, almost Josh Fraser bad. Frustrating as hell for a supporter to watch. He's certainly not guaranteed a place in next year's 22, under threat from younger talent in Wilkes and Lee.

If next year is to be his final year, then touch wood he stays fit and gets to play forward most games. If he maintains his accuracy it's not impossible to see him kicking 35-40 goals.

VETERAN St Kilda big man Justin Koschitzke is aware of the challenges ahead of him this year but has put in a pre-season that leaves him well placed to face them, says Leigh Montagna.

"He's probably done more of a pre-season than he has in previous years.

"It's been a bit of a deliberate ploy by both the club and him to just get him out there and run him and just get a good work load up and a good base.

"Hopefully that can really consolidate to playing a lot of football and playing really well."

JUSTIN Koschitzke wants to play in the Ovens and Murray league when his AFL career is over.
The Brocklesby-raised St Kilda star is about to enter his 13th AFL season.
“I’m really keen to give something back,” Koschitzke, 30, said.
“I’d love to play footy at its purest again, without that physical and mental drain.
“If I’m capable, I’m sure I will.”

JUSTIN Koschitzke is fighting for his career.
The Brocklesby big man has revealed to The Border Mail he’s been given no guarantees from coach Scott Watters about a regular spot in St Kilda’s best side this year.
He even put off post-season surgery over the summer to ensure he didn’t fall too far behind.
He couldn’t afford to.Koschitzke said he had been advised to go under the knife at the end of last season after the Saints narrowly missed out on finals.
But for the former No. 2 draft pick, the extended layoff that comes after surgery wasn’t an option. “I had a dicky shoulder and a bit of a hip complaint but now I’m feeling really good.
“I’ve got a pretty clear message that I’m fighting for a spot,” Koschitzke said.
“The club’s keen for me to play but the coach has been pretty direct in telling me that I need to put my best foot forward each week.
“Reputations are out the window because we’ve got some good kids coming through.”
The heat is clearly on but Koschitzke isn’t flustered.

http://www.saints.com.au/news/2013-05-31/mentor-role-rewarding-kosi

Koschitzke “I’ve really enjoyed going back and mentoring a few of the kids. We’ve got some real exciting young kids – a couple of tall kids who are going to be alright.”

“I’ve enjoyed watching them develop over the course of the pre-season and the season. It’s been rewarding in that respect.”

“I’ll have a hit out with the Zebs this week and see what happens. I suppose it’s up to form, the other guys and injuries.”

“It’s the old cliché that I’ve just got to go and play footy, get some fitness in the legs and get a kick so I am up for selection when the time comes.”

“(Watters has) been straight up. He’s told me that if my time’s up he’ll tap me on the shoulder and I haven’t got that tap on the shoulder yet.”

“I still rock up to training ready to rock and roll, I’m helping the kids out and trying to get a kick myself. Hopefully I can get back into that jumper soon.”

it appears he is taking a liking to the mentoring role, good on him. Need young tall key players to stand asap now that Rooey and Kosi are in the twilight (More so Kosi)

http://www.bordermail.com.au/story/1569815/kosi-will-play-200-roberts/

St Kilda will ensure Justin Koschitzke plays 200 games for the club, according to former Saint Michael Roberts.

“I like Kosi. His charity work and off the field stuff is sensational. You can’t fault it."

“I can’t wait for him to get his 200th. He’ll get it; the club will get him over the line, I reckon.”

“He’s got a great personality, is mentoring young kids and even when he’s sent back to the VFL he doesn’t throw the toys out of the cot."

Kosi to reach 200 in his last game for the Saints.

AS A man who has never lost touch with his country roots, Justin Koschitzke has never been the type to seek the limelight.
The 30-year-old veteran who announced his retirement from football this week is not too different to the 18-year-old kid from Brocklesby, NSW who arrived at the Saints at the end of 2000.
So in a season that has led to plenty of speculation about whether he would get to his 200th and final game, Koschitzke is grateful that he looks like sharing the occasion with fellow retirees Jason Blake and Stephen Milne and fellow 200 gamer Adam Schneider.
“It is so great that it is not just about one of us – it’s not just about my 200th, Schneids’ 200th or whoever is retiring,” Koschitzke said.
