Im sure he regrets going home, playing in two grand finals and winning a premiership medallion. Missing out on those two NAB Cup runners up medals in 06 and 08 must really get to him.

. <- the point you -> :confused:

We didn't miss him, and he never took the next step.

congrats kane on a good footy career, great player for us, unfortunately finished at the the rabble. never forget him spearing that pass to dj in the 97 prelim, ahh memories:o. good luck for the future

was checking out the richmond threads on this topic, there is some sour and bitter supporters over there, lmao!

Sugar was an amazing young player with us - great contributions to our two premierships. I don't harbour any grudges for him wanting to return home - hell, he'd achieved a lot with us - maybe it was about the challenge for him? I remember Blighty saying he (Blight) thought he should have left after the first premiership and absolutely should have left after the second. Something about losing the desire once the ultimate was attained. Maybe it was like that for Kane as well?

Congrats to Johno on a great career, I wish him well in his future. Genuinely nice bloke! :thumbsu:

I rate Stenglein but c'mon, he would have nothing to regret. He played off in a GF and won one of them. Thats what you play the footy for and the Eagles in their prime played some fun, exciting football.

It was still a trade that we did pretty well out of. We got Thompson and pick 28 (Chad Gibson). If we used that pick better would be be so far ahead in that deal. We still did very very well since I think Thompson is a better player that Stenglein ever was.

Thommo a better player by a long way, mainyl because he was is just the type of ahrd aggresive player who wins clearences that we needed and still need.

Stenglein has had an excellent career though as has Johnson who as others ahve said played better footy for us than Richmond.

Before and after shots of his career should be shown to all our interstate draftees as an example of the perils of returning home.

Only if the "before" shot features the 70's rock star haircut and the gaffer tape headband.

One of those careers that kept getting derailed by injury (soft tissue, fractures and just plain unlucky things like his appendix) at the wrong time. One full season in fourteen. An important player for us, and he did the right thing by the club in the manner of his departure.

Hold absolutely no resentment towards Kane, it(the move to Richmond) was probably always going to happen considering he and his family were such die hard Richmond fans, playing for them and then captaining would have been his childhood dream come true. We also did pretty well out of the deal, Torney and Pick 4 was pretty decent.

Stenglein's similar, we got what 100 games out of him and his departure facilitated us getting a much younger Scott Thompson back to Adelaide. Considering we had Shirley to take over the tagging duties at the time anyway, I don't think Stengleins loss has hurt us at all, especially considering the player Thompson has turned out to be.

Well done Kane, a very consistent and honest player for the Crows, wish him well in whatever pursuits he takes up in life after footy. :thumbsu:

meh, Judas. The AFC gave him two premierships and how did he repay us, in his prime he p*ssed off home.

I was always under the impression that he would have stayed with us if we asked him to. Rumours are that in 05 he even spoke to Adelaide and expressed a desire to finish his career with the afc.

Yeah but he was vital to the Weagles premiership year as he complimented the likes of Judd, Kerr, Cousins, Embley, Fletcher etc. He was never going to take the "next step". He was a very good solid footballer who played the tagging role very well and was one of the best taggers in the game when we traded him. Add to the fact that he was only 24/25 and in his prime we got fair compensation for him. He was certainly a step up from Shirley.

I meant Johnson missing out on those medals although I might have misunderstood Macca's post on reflection.

Agree 100% on all you say on Stenglein. We did really well out of that trade. Much like Johnson if they have to go the key is to get the maximum for them as Port failed to do with their childish stand against Collingwood re Nick Stevens. They were offered pick 17 and 35, how that can be worse than nothing I've never understood

Yea, but the Stevens things showed just why so many Crows fans still have a great deal of affection for Stenglein & Johnson.

They both hung around here and pay back the development we put into them, and they also asked to be traded, but with the caveat that we, as a Club, would not be screwed by their departure.

You can't ask any more from them than that, and that's why I rate them both, as footballers, and as people.

Well there goes my dream of Sugar returning to play in the third AFC premiership! :(

Was a classy player who was hampered by injury and was Richmondised in the latter stages of his career. We did quite well out of that trade (Torney). We were very close to sending him to Richmond the previous year in exchange for Ben Holland. Thank **** that trade never eventuated!

Johnson was never one of my favourite players, and I was glad when we shipped him off to Richmond.

Surprised he lasted this long to be honest. No big loss to the Crows when he left, and no big loss to the AFL now that he's retired.

I wish him the best he was a class act at the Crows and did us a real service for the years he played for us.
I often thought of him when I saw him as the captain of Richmond with the Crows tattoo on his lower leg, perhaps he always wore long socks!!I saw him and some of the younger lads at the time at a Big Day Out after the the 97 & 98 premierships and was stoked they had gone the ink!

Good luck to him!

As I mentioned on the main board I best remember him as a teenager in the '97 prelim, with minutes to go marking in the centre square, turning and hitting Jars lace out.
He definitely wasn't out of place in the premiership sides.

Was probably on a bucket load of cash as the only premiership player to walk thru Punt Road in 20 years.

!
sorry to intrude boys and girls but i had to laugh at this because we also managed to aquire 2 of your other premierships hero's in that time.

None other than the great Clay Sampson and the mighty Ben Marsh!!!!

Congratulations Kane on a good career.

I must admit tho, i did lose some respect for him when he made a point in the media when he was traded of how much of a "club" Richmond is in comparison to Adelaide.

Lets hope the majority of supporters dont feel all lovey, dovey like some on this board. We put alot of good years into him, he shared in 2 premierships and then deserted us in his prime.

He could have been a champion and club legend but he chose Richmond instead. :o

IMO Kane Johnson was a very good player. He was in career best form when he left us in 2002.

He left us to go to a "real" football club using his own words.
Ah karma is a wonderful thing.
Hope he enjoyed his 7 years of nothing.

Johnson did the right thing by us by nominating a club that was prepared to give us more than a fair deal for him. There's no way I hold any grudge against him - only those that traded away the draft pick involved with his trade for Carey.

As others have said, while he became captain of the club he loved, he never had the same impact on a game IMO as he did here. I was really surprised when he was appointed captain, because I knew him apart from footy and never found him to be a great communicator.

His biggest asset was that he was a beautiful user of the ball, which made him so effective.

Never had a problem with Kane going home, he stayed a lot longer than he wanted to and we got a very good deal for giving him up. He played 100 games for us and he contributed to both premierships (I believe he repaid us well for our investment in him). So I hold no grudges against him for chasing his boyhood dream.

Cheers Kane for some great memories. All the best for the future!

Haha, funny considering the following quote from the paper yesterday:

"He (Johnson) described Adelaide as "a fantastic club. What Richmond has got to aspire to. "At the moment, we've still got a way to go, but I'm sure they're (the administration) doing the right things to make sure they get there," he said."

I agree with James. I am pretty sure i read at the time of his departure that Kane Johnson said that if Adelaide was a club based in Victoria he would never have left. He didn’t leave as he didn’t like the club, state or player – he left as he wanted to be closer to his family.

i wonder if he now has any regrets about leaving?
