NORWOOD recruit Kieren McGuinness would love a crack at Crows great Andrew McLeod in the annual Redlegs-Crows inter-league trial match at The Parade on Friday.
The shrewd 190cm former Western Bulldogs key-position utility is not being cocky, he just wants to keep learning from the best. It's likely McLeod will rest but McGuinness, 23, has stood greats Adam Goodes, Jason Akermanis and Matthew Pavlich, so he doesn't really mind who he gets from 7.40pm.
"They (Crows) are all quality players but it would be great if I got someone like Andrew McLeod," said McGuinness, who played 27 AFL games (2002-06.) "You learn more about the game when you play on the good players.
"Adam Goodes plays in bursts, which is how I like to play but Matthew Pavlich runs continuously - that was an experience." Capable at either end of the ground, McGuinness is set to debut along with Iggy Vallejo (St Marys, Darwin) but Ed McDonnell, 20, (St Kilda) will rest a slight hamstring strain as will newly-appointed captain James Gallagher. Scott Borlace is recovering from shoulder surgery.
Adelaide is likely to rest Mark Ricciuto. Several young Crows will get a run in the curtain-raiser between the SANFL under-18s and Norwood's reserves from 5pm.
A good showing against Adelaide would enhance any reputation but McGuinness is interested more in showing his new team-mates he can play. Refreshingly, he says he won't live on past achievements and he is not obsessed about getting another crack at the AFL.
"At the moment I'm thinking more about impressing the team-mates I'll be playing with this year," he said. "I want to prove to them I can do okay more than showing AFL scouts I can play against AFL players."
Impressed by the stronger club culture the SANFL has over the VFL, McGuinness is yet to feel the tribal passion of the competition where about 5000 fans turn out to games compared to a couple of hundred in the VFL. But he already knows how Croweaters can react.
"We (Dogs) were about 30 points up at AAMI and McLeod started kicking goals from everywhere and the fans went crazy," he said. "All footy fans are passionate but I think the Adelaide people take it to a new level."
