Legs recruit wants crack at Macca

NORWOOD recruit Kieren McGuinness would love a crack at Crows great Andrew McLeod in the annual Redlegs-Crows inter-league trial match at The Parade on Friday.
The shrewd 190cm former Western Bulldogs key-position utility is not being cocky, he just wants to keep learning from the best. It's likely McLeod will rest but McGuinness, 23, has stood greats Adam Goodes, Jason Akermanis and Matthew Pavlich, so he doesn't really mind who he gets from 7.40pm.
"They (Crows) are all quality players but it would be great if I got someone like Andrew McLeod," said McGuinness, who played 27 AFL games (2002-06.) "You learn more about the game when you play on the good players.
"Adam Goodes plays in bursts, which is how I like to play but Matthew Pavlich runs continuously - that was an experience." Capable at either end of the ground, McGuinness is set to debut along with Iggy Vallejo (St Marys, Darwin) but Ed McDonnell, 20, (St Kilda) will rest a slight hamstring strain as will newly-appointed captain James Gallagher. Scott Borlace is recovering from shoulder surgery.
Adelaide is likely to rest Mark Ricciuto. Several young Crows will get a run in the curtain-raiser between the SANFL under-18s and Norwood's reserves from 5pm.
A good showing against Adelaide would enhance any reputation but McGuinness is interested more in showing his new team-mates he can play. Refreshingly, he says he won't live on past achievements and he is not obsessed about getting another crack at the AFL.
"At the moment I'm thinking more about impressing the team-mates I'll be playing with this year," he said. "I want to prove to them I can do okay more than showing AFL scouts I can play against AFL players."
Impressed by the stronger club culture the SANFL has over the VFL, McGuinness is yet to feel the tribal passion of the competition where about 5000 fans turn out to games compared to a couple of hundred in the VFL. But he already knows how Croweaters can react.
"We (Dogs) were about 30 points up at AAMI and McLeod started kicking goals from everywhere and the fans went crazy," he said. "All footy fans are passionate but I think the Adelaide people take it to a new level."

The picture is funny. Also amusing is the big wrap KMac gets for his "jobs" on Goodes and Pav. Haha. Hope he plays well though, the legs need some tall timber.

KMAC says "I won't live on past achievements" WHAT ACHIEVEMENTS?????

I think you might be reading this out of context. If he'd gone to another AFL club this would be fair comment. He's gone to the SANFL with over a season of AFL games under his belt. People with his AFL experience are expected to dominate at that level and his Werribee form suggests he probably will. As far as performing in a big way in the SANFL is concerned, he does have achievements.

5 years on an AFL list, a star in the tier below the AFL. There must be some very good footballers posting on this board for K-Mac's achievements to be mocked.

What he said (and Wind Sock as well).

Thats exactly the kind of mediocrity and complacency the Western Bulldogs are trying to get rid of! albeit a loser's mentality.

Firstly, he didn't say this. The reporter said it. What he said is:

"At the moment I'm thinking more about impressing the team-mates I'll be playing with this year," he said. "I want to prove to them I can do okay more than showing AFL scouts I can play against AFL players."

Nothing wrong with any of that. He is focussing on Norwood, not on a potential return to AFL footy in 2008. You need to pay attention to quote marks. They are used in written language to indicate what someone actually said.

Second, I for one wish I had played just one game of AFL footy. Kieran is a helluva lot better player than I ever was.

Absolute drivel. It just takes an elementary ability to read what he is saying in context to see that he is saying that he'll let his actions do the talking. That is all, except for a clear hint that he will be trying to do well enough to impress other AFL scouts but will be putting his new team first. Where is the mediocrity and complacency in that?

As for my opinion, I think in the competitive world of trying to stay on an AFL list, Kieran probably had to go, but I don't see why anybody should insult him on his way out the door. I really don't get it. Apart from being not quite good enough, what did he do to earn the contempt of people who've never got even close to being drafted by an AFL club? Would someone who is dissing him care to explain to those of us who think he should be allowed to leave with dignity why they don't want that to happen?
