Lets talk about Larsy, some songs I think he is really bad, but the song Dyers Eve, which has a really good beat, but when KoRn did One, that was embarrasing for Lars, KoRns drummer did the double bass bit at the end, he creamed all over Lars, Unbeleivably.

There has been a lot of talk on Lars Ulrich and how good/bad he is, now you can post it in this Thread :thumbsu:

Terrible drummer in one of the greatest most influential bands of our time. Put on any album until the black album and what is the weakest link??

IS is James' lyrical content? wouldn't have thought so

Is it James' song writing? highly unlikely

Is it Kirk's Guitar playing? best lead guitarist going around

Is it Lars 4/4 0r 3/4 drumming?

The answer is easy....

His playing is sloppy, his beats are unimaginative and boring. For a band that was so forward thinking, creative and skilfully blessed, he was the one band member that always struggle to keep up with his band mates and in the end would only lay down those boring repetitive patterns.

AS for dyers eve, you don't wanna know how long that took for him to nail in the studio.

If you watch their doco, you can see the tension between Lars and James and what he really thinks of Lars' playing.

Whilst his pedal work was quite good back in the day, there are drummers who can play his double pedal work with one foot.

Correction dogupya, Kirk Hammett has never been the best lead guitarist going around. Sure, he is well above average, and his work on Ride The Lightning was quite exemplary, but he hasnt performed at that standard for at least 15 years, and never will again. On to Lars- he was just always a ******** drummer. Back in the day he never got past being just good, on his day perhaps very good occasionally, but in a band hailed as demi-gods for their early to mid- 80's work he just doesnt cut it. One word sums him up nicely- OVERRATED.

Geat post, I actually didn't say he was good..

I also forgot to mention St Anger..

Need I say more? A 2 year old could grab thier parents' pans and bang them and probably would do a better job :p

On to the Kirk Hammett thing, I think he is very overrated, I think James Hetfield is better than Kirk.

Lars would be in the thousands as far as best drummer ratings is concerned. Kirk would probably be around 7-800th on best guitarist ratings.

Lets not get confused here.... James has written almost all of those classic albums without input from Kirk, so there is no rating to be done.... James is by far the driving force behind this band.

Also, when Metallica had a lead section, Kirk was by far the best at it....

Not only were his lead breaks of technical quality, but they also followed the theme of the song, which is why they sound so damn good and sound like they belong.

You listen to all the solos going around and they sound so out of place with what the song is doing... Slayer for instance have great solos through their music, but it sounds horrible and out of place against the backdrop of what the song is doing. So no need to correct me, I'm right!

Lars is terrible now a days...but I still love the beats he put down on most of the songs in the studio..airdrumming madness...my favourite lars moments 'blackened' and 'sad but true'

Isn't bashing Metallica and/or Lars getting old by now?

I have never read Lars stating that he was a good/great drummer. I have never heard him compare himself to some of the greats.
Sure, Metallisheep worldwide have made those claims on his behalf but every band has their fair share of delusional fans.
I'm sure that their are thousands upon thousands of garage players that would wipe the floor with Lars but that is irrelevant. They've had their chance to hone their skills in absolute obscurity while Lars' recorded output started in his late teens.
It is dissapointing that he hasn't improved over the years, but his overall contribution in bringing some of the finest thrash metal of the 80's to the masses has not been lost on me. And I'm not only referring to Metallica's music.
Eternal respect from me regardless of how good a drummer he is.

You've changed your tune pretty quickly metallicamatty!! Wasnt long ago you were idolising uncle Lars on here and going toe to toe with us old farts telling you he was no good! What happened mate? And who have you discovered since that may have added a bit of a different perspective?

Anyway, i've written too many words on here about Lars' ability or lack there of as a skinsman and what i think of him as a dude going by what i've read and seen.

One thing i will say though is that while he may not have ever been overly capable of playing a great tune, there can be no doubt that along with Hetfield he was part of a team that were certainly once able to write one. Not sure thats still the case though. I guess we'll know later this year...

And the fact that he and his band have inspired countless kids to want to try to learn how to play an instrument over the years or at the very least discover a genre of music that they were a massive part of providing exposure to adds a bit in his favour.

You guys are losers mate lars IS and WILL ALWAYS be a legend st angers drumming was bad coz his drums were tuned down if any of you read anything about them you will know he said ''IM PULLING THE DRUMS OUT OF THE BOXES '' for the new album and if Korns drummer is better than lars , he wouldnt be in a second rate band. I especially like his use of the word "gooses".
I guess this is the result of thrashing your head about in a violent manner for far too long.

I wonder if he still wears his green jacket with patches all over it.

EVERYDAY mate , you still got your pink tutu ?

Hey man, I've been thrashing my head around in a violent manner since 1983, and I can still concoct an intelligent sentence!!!

But, admittedly, MY green army jacket was retired in around 1986....

Lars has always been an average drummer (at best) but I love watching him play just for the facial expressions he pulls... Anyway, in real metal news, I have heard Sodom is coming to Australia... Can anyone confirm??

Can you post this ratings list, all the way down to Ulrich and Hammett :D

to continue the title of the thread

...is an average drummer who simply gets the job done and I'm a massive Metallica fan but I don't see the point in hyping him up when I listen to lesser bands with better drummers.

He's good enough to not ruin my favourite band of all time (along with Maiden) but not good enough to make me stand back and say 'wow he's good'

Always looks like he puts in a lot of effort live though.

Some people may call me a fence-sitter but hey I don't see the point in bagging him ruthlessly like some do...nor do I see the point in talking him up as being something he ain't

From the sodom website (I'm also a big fan of theirs):

Festivals:
08/26 I-Neapel - Hammer Metal Fest
09/02 IRL-Dublin - Mysterious Wounds Festival
11/04 SCO-Perth - Ragnarock Festival
11/24 Turkey ...details coming ...

It's Perth so it ain't Melbourne so it's a start. It's also in Scotland...not Australia so that's another minor setback but we'll get there.
