What's your opinion on Dylan? I am expecting big things from the lanky defender this year. I believe he has had an uninterrupted preseason, and is due to really hit his straps. Got footy smarts pace and great attitude, and having Rance our AA, Astbury the revelation, and then finally Grimes coming into his own with the other usual suspects will make our defence elite. Thoughts?

I reckon he has lots of potential and could be a gun third tall, but the problem is there's no room for him in the side at the moment.
Rance and Astbury take the best two talls and then Chaplin in the leadership group is guaranteed games. Grimes then sits on the cusp waiting for an injury. He'll play 5-10 games scattered throughout but I don't see him getting consistent time.

IMO, I hope he takes Chaplins spot this year. Grimes offers good skills, the ability to read the play and he rarely panics IMO. If he can continue to work on his offensive game, and starts to become a more attacking weapon from the back half, that should get him to hold his spot. I really rate Grimes, if he stays injury free I can see him easily playing 200 games

Grimes has shown no offensive game so far. I think he's a good defender, I think he's a smart footballer. He certainly gets the best out of what he's got.

I'm just not sure he has a great deal of AFL high-level skill. He's OK.

We can't play Rance, Astbury, Chaplin, Grimes and Batchelor in the same side. Too slow (although Grimes is probably the quickest of all those).

Never understood the hype around him.

Clearly struggled over the years due to various reasons but has also shown some signs. Hopefully he has got a good pre season in and can do some quality stuff this year

Offensively I agree. He has rarely put it together in an attacking sense. The few times he has begun to look like a two way player he does a hammy.

But defensively he was our best player thru 10-12. Rance probably over taken him now but I have high hopes if gets an injury free run. I think it was in 12 that despite playing 9 games he had the most spoils in the comp. He is also lightening quick, I've seen him out pace Lewis Taylor and Eddie betts.

Also his last few games, grimes started using his speed up the ground. IMO the focus he has now is to continue to develop that side of his game.

How often are players in a club's leadership group dropped?
Grimes won't be taking Chaplin's spot.

I thought he had a few games towards the end of last year where he really did start to get his offensive side going pretty well. He'll never be the type to get mid 20s disposals, but I still think there's a place for him.
He's finally had some decent continuity in his game the last 12-18 months, so hopefully we'll see more of it in 2015

Intersting one as I really rate Dylan, and from Dimmas pressers a few years ago he also really rates him... If fit i think he will definately be selected ahead of Batch and they will start with tall four (rance, chapy, grimes and Ast) with houli and possibly hunt/newman/lennon in the other slot..

I think Grimes runs off quite well....much moreso than Chaplin and Astbury! But at the end of the day, who gives a flying... LOL He's in the team to play as a defensive defender....not an offensive one so silly to even bring it up. Can go and peel off when he has to, otherwise he's rock solid.

Yep would also like to have seen him Develop into a rebounding HB. Great character and he seems to be an intelligent man. Let's see what this year brings, I'm expecting really promising signs

Ones a key position player and one isn't on just height alone. Imo Grimes will build on his fitness from
Last year with his first injury free preseason for a long time and show us the player we all thought he was going to be before his hamstring injuries . He's set for a massive year and will play a lot of good footy. Go grimes I say !

Agree with your assessment Rusty. I'd add that as he continues to play & gather more confidence in his body & his game develops further we may find with his speed he will grow into a more attacking player. I don't think Dimma will allow his weapons to be unused in both directions...

I disagree there. 2013 when he and Rance were starting to form a good pair back there, and before he did his hammy (the one whick he went to Germany for IIRC), I reckon his rebound was actually pretty good. I reckon he lacks confidence though.

I'll probably get shouted down for this but I can see him playing HBF in a 7 man defence. His kicking is neat enough but he does tend to err on the side of safety too much IMO.

i'm in the minority here and think Grimes has a lot of upside.
He's a natural athlete with the right build to do great things at AFL level.
He's got height, pace and courage...and I've seen him burn his opposite on many occasions.

But he needs an uninterrupted season where he can gain the confidence to run off half-back and link up with mids and forwards.
His kicking needs work, but that will come with uninterrupted game time.

His first 6 or so games where the best any new recruit had played for us from Coghlan to Miles. That's a good effort it was just his bacon strings that knocked him around.

which one?

The taller one is and the shorter one isn't although the taller one is better at playing short than the shorter one is at playing tall but the shorter one is better at playing short than the taller one even though he's alright at it.
