Hey mate, don't want to come across as being negative or anything, and I like that someone is going to the effort to put together some AFL game stories, but I have been reading your Crows story and now this Lions one and unfortunately no one is going to be interested in these unless you put some personality into your stories. It's all well and good to just report on what happens but it gets quite boring after a while. Add some personal flair in, some humour, some aggro, whatever. Make it unique and get people invested!
The Crows one had potential but seems like you just gave up after the team started getting smashed every week. It was ripe for a full club rebuild, build up some young stars and go from there. Endless opportunities to have fun with it!
I used to write up stuff like this all the time but unless you make it an actual story no one is going to stay super invested in it.
This Lions one with just scores is not gonna cut it either. But yeah, I apologise for coming across as super negative but I enjoy these stories so keep at it mate!

Cheers for the feedback mate. Nice to know someone is reading them haha. My problem is once I am in, I want to see where it goes and start playing quicker and putting less effort into the posts. The Crows one killed me losing an unbelievable player who didn't want to re-sign, and because I've set rules for myself on the game I had to deal with it. We were right at the perfect time to launch and lost 5 players to not re-signing. Then I started playing quickly and lost interest. So who's point of view should they be written from do you think? And do they need colour and pictures?

I will keep this Lions one, and stop simming from now.

2020. Finals.
22/8/2020
So I've been handed the reins to a Lions team that started the season strong, and limped into the finals. I'm not even sure if we deserved to make it. From 8-1 to 12-10 - not exactly finals credentials. On top of this, the Swans finished on the same points and percentage but we got the 8th position and they didn't. Alas it is a pretty awesome opportunity to start my coaching career in a finals game. I've been involved in the Lions organisation throughout the year, and had a pretty close eye on what is happening internally. In terms of our list, I think we are in a pretty good place with some good veterans and some young talent as well. The biggest off-season task is going to be contract management. There is an absolute maximum of four spots left, with 15 players vying for those spots. Stef Martin has resigned into next year, after a really good season for the Lions. I'd say he'll poll very well in the best and fairest and really deserves his contract extension. The contracts will have to wait until after the finals when I can consider things like development, retirements, trade targets and draft goals. Eric Hipwood has been sensational this year, finishing 4th in the Coleman with 62 goals (20 games). I don't think we will have him for the elimination final, which will make things very hard. I'm going to pick a team for the final quite objectively, but will also take into account each player's body of work across 2020. With a bit of luck we might have Mitch Robinson back thanks to the pre-finals bye. We did beat the Bulldogs earlier in the year and Eric kicked four. Luckily Daniel McStay was cleared of his report, as he kicked seven in our final game of the year.

24/8/2020
Pretty stoked to have two All-Australian selections, Stef and Harris Andrews. They have been pillars for us this year and if we are to do anything in the finals from eighth, I'd say they'll have a fair bit to do with it.

TEAM SELECTION.
1629332409581.png

27/8/2020
We will play the Giants in an elimination final, my first game as coach of the Lions. Robbo and Jarrod Berry are big ins for us just in time, while Cedric Cox is a young defender with 18 games of experience that we rate highly. He was selected ahead of both Birchall and Lester so there will be pressure on him to perform. I am hoping that Toby Wooller can deliver as a full forward, as his contested marks and set shots are both strengths for him. Not having Eric won't be easy, but our fortunes will improve if Toby can deliver. We will need high impact from Dayne playing high half forward, and we think that Brandon Starcevich has plenty of promise across the same line. The game will be won or lost in the midfield, as both sides are strong and attacking through there. The Giants are missing Coniglio who has been a vital part of their setup in 2020.

Game day

1st Quarter.
Completely and utterly outplayed in the first and we are down by 7 goals. Whitfield having a picnic out there and Taranto, Hately are super damaging. Jarrod Berry standing up but need way more from the midfield. Entries into forward 50 very messy. Zorko to the middle. Robbo to defence. Lyons dragged.

2nd Quarter.
Started to get our own football a bit but still way behind. Poor kicking at goal making things worse. Stef putting everyone on his back and Dayne lifted. Charlie can't get his hands on it, will try him as a full-forward. Harris will move to CHB.

3rd Quarter.
Big brawl to start the term, might get the boys going. Back in it. Good performance in the third. Margin still 21 but they're gettable. Berry and Martin on fire. Neale coming into the contest. Charlie ice-cold, and not in a good way. Giants have gone small in their forward line. Big performance for Cal Ward for them so far in this match. Marcus Adams will move into the forward line.

4th Quarter.
Our kicking killed us. Plain and simple, we had the chances but didn't deliver. Langdon kicked two in a row for the Giants which stopped our momentum after first two of the quarter. Ely Smith good all day and McCluggage got better as the game went on. Disappointing end to the year, and a tough first game as coach. The guys worked hard to get back into it, but missed vital chances when it mattered most. Charlie played his worst game of the year so far so a big job will be working out how he plays best.

2020. Planning for 2021.
31/8/2020
As the finals drone on without us, its really time to start addressing next year properly. As mentioned previously, we have a pretty huge contract issue on our hands, with 15 players going for 4 spots. I'll break that down, as well as work out a drafting strategy, who's on the trading block and I will look at our 2020 numbers closely in order to ID specific areas for list improvement.

First, the contract situation.

Out of contractAssessment
Allen Christensen29 year old forward. Had a good season playing 20 games in the seniors (avg 74 fantasy). Kicked just 10 goals. 3rd highest average inside 50s.
Callum Ah Chee22 year old who hasn't established a position. Played one game in the seniors and had an ok season in the reserves.
Cedric Cox23 year old defender who played 6 games in 2020, including the elimination final. Ranked 3rd at the Lions for average rebounds. Seems to have upside and would be a good signing. Low clanger count.
Corey Lyons22 year old midfielder, spent 2020 on the rookie list. Had a very consistent season in the reserves, could be re-rookied but hard to see him getting a new contract before then.
Grant Birchall33 year old defender with 250 games of experience. Very experienced but ratings have fallen sharply in 2020 and did not play in the EF.
Jack Payne20 Year old key defender. Made his debut in 2020 but played only one game. Had an ok year in the reserves. Local boy, possible re-rookie.
Jacob Allison22 year old half-back. Had a very good season in the reserves and spent the whole season on the rookie list. Queenslander.
James Madden20 year old Uncapped rookie from Ireland. Mid-forward who had some promising performances in the reserves. Hard to see him getting a contract.
Marcus Adams27 year old key defender. Played every game in 2020, averaged 50 fantasy points. Would be good to keep him around for leadership and may still have some good football in him. Low clanger count.
Matt Eagles30 year old key defender, spent 2020 on the rookie list and had an ok season in the reserves. Although still improving, unlikely to win a contract ahead of Adams.
Mitchell Hinge22 year old defender from SA. Had a very good season in the reserves finishing runner up in the B & F, but is part of a score of defenders trying to win a contract for 2021.
Ryan Lester28 year old defender with over 100 games experience. Played just 5 games in the seniors and had a good season in the reserves. Touch and go whether he earns a new deal.
Sam Skinner23 year old key defender who had an okay season in the reserves. In a very smilar position to Jack Payne.
Toby Wooller21 year old key forward. Played 9 games in 2020 and kicked 10 goals. Likely to win a new contract.
Tom Joyce20 year old midfielder who had a consistent season in the reserves. May struggle to get a new deal.

Second, the drafting strategy.

At this stage we have picks 10, 38, 56, 74 and 92 into the National Draft. Ted Campbell from Morningside in QLD is a ruckman and a top 10 prospect, but we will have to get ourselves up the order to secure him. Campbell would be drafted as an eventual replacement for Martin, and would compete with Archie Smith and Oscar McInerney for the #1 spot. Duncan Leadbetter is another player we are looking at, a good 1 on 1 defender from Broadbeach in QLD. The draft is not being talked up as a strong one, so we may choose to re-sign more players and use less draft picks to fill the list.

Who is on the trading block?

Tom Fullarton, 22, Key Forward.
Rhys Mathieson, 24, Mid-forward.
Keidean Coleman, 21, Mid-Forward.
Archie Smith, 25, Ruckman

The Bombers have won the 2020 Grand Final against the Hawks. I'll take a close look at both their lists to see what it is that makes them successful, and potentially use this information to recruit some of their players.

28/9/2020

Stef Martin and Dayne Zorko have been added to next years lists as veterans. This means we can only sign a maximum of 4 rookies.

Daniel Rich has been named as captain with Neale, Zorko and Martin as his deputies.

I've done a breakdown of the key areas of performance for 2020, and where our average per game as a team sits against the rest. The data shows that the defence seems to be working well, but we need more of a tackling presence and clearances should be converted into inside 50s. The fact we are low on clangers is good, and the number of clangers per game will be looked at when making decisions on contracts. Disposals suggests we could win more of the ball too.

Trade targets will be based on
-Goal kicking accuracy
-Tackling
-Ability to find the ball
-Contested mark

2020. TRADE WEEK.
1629351144449.png
2/11/2020 Monday.
We are looking at using only three picks in the National Draft. We want to upgrade our first round pick from 10 to 4 or higher.

The teams we will need to work with are the Crows, Suns, Dockers and Kangaroos.

1629348067387.png

Cameron Ellis-Yolmen is listed as homesick - From South Australia.

Scenario 1: Cam Ellis-Yolmen + pick 10 for Crows pick 1.

Scenario 2: Cam Ellis-Yolmen + pick 10 + pick 74 for Elliot Himmelberg and Crows pick 1.

1629348123983.png
Jarrod Berry is listed as homesick - From Victoria.
Very valuable player, would prefer to keep him and he did sign a 5 year deal.
The Kangaroos have some good young players listed as gettable including:
-Bailey Scott (QLD boy)
-Tarryn Thomas (on my list for accurate goal kicker)
-Nick Larkey

Scenario 3: Jarrod Berry + pick 38 for pick 4 and Bailey Scott or Tarryn Thomas

Scenario 4: Pick 38 for Tarryn Thomas

1629348105735.png

Jack Bowes is a good young player from QLD that could be a replacement for Jarrod Berry if we were to trade him.
Rory Thompson is listed as a player with good tackling skill

Scenario 5: Pick 38 and Rhys Mathieson for Jack Bowes

Scenario 6: Pick 56 for Rory Thompson

3/11/2020 Tuesday

1629349047346.png

Tory Dickson is listed as very tradeable and has the best goal accuracy in the competition.
Aaron Naughton is gettable, and is the best contested mark in the competition. He would require a first rounder or straight swap for Jarrod Berry.

Scenario 9: Jarrod Berry for Aaron Naughton

Scenario 10: Pick 10 for Aaron Naughton

1629349592483.png

Oscar Allen is a gettable player for us, and is an elite kick at goal.

Scenario 11: Jaxon Prior (WA) + Pick 74 or 56 for Oscar Allen

1629349837230.png

Luke Breust could be made available for the right deal and is an elite kick at goal.

Scenario 12: Noah Answerth + Pick 92 for Luke Breust

1629350299097.png

Josh Thomas is rated as a very good shot at goal and on the block for the Magpies.

Scenario 13: Tom Fullarton + Pick 92 for Josh Thomas.

1629350582116.png

Rowan Marshal is potentially an elite ruckman of the competition. He is listed as available for the right deal, which would likely be a high pick and/or a player. It would mean that we would not need to get Campbell in the draft.

Scenario 14: Rhys Mathieson + Pick 93 for Rowan Marshall.

Scenario 15: Tom Fullarton + Pick 38 for Rowan Marshall.

1629350808341.png

Could Tom Lynch be convinced to return back to QLD? With the right deal he might be gettable, and would be the perfect support for Eric.

Scenario 16: Tom Fullarton + Pick 38 for Tom Lynch.

4/11/2020Wednesday.

Today we will need to start making some decisions on what moves to make, so I will put them in order. I'm making two trades maximum in this window, and want to take three picks into the National Draft.

*Plan 1: IN. Tarryn Thomas, Jack Bowes, Pick 4. OUT. Jarrod Berry, Rhys Mathieson, Pick 10, Pick 38, Pick 74.
*Plan 2: IN. Aaron Naughton, Pick 1. OUT. Jarrod Berry, Cameron Ellis-Yolmen, Pick 10.
*Plan 3: IN Lachie Weller, Pick 3. OUT. Rhys Mathieson, Pick 10, Pick 38.
*Plan 4: IN Tom Lynch. OUT Tom Fullarton, Pick 38.
*Plan 5: IN Oscar Allen. OUT Jaxon Prior, Pick 56.

DONE DEAL
1629352276528.png

TRADE OFFER

This was tempting from the Giants, considering the talent of Taylor. But we've really liked Brock's development so far and want to give him a chance to cement himself into the 22 next season.

1629352696683.png

TRADE OFFER

Didn't consider these ones too carefully from the Blues. The first one would have been irresponsible for many reasons, the main one being Stef's 2020 campaign. The second trade although decent on paper would have clogged the list, and neither of those players are world-beaters at the moment. Nice try Blues.
1629352858494.png
1629352840068.png

That wraps up a huge trade week for us. We were able to find Jarrod Berry a new home, and recruit Jack Bowes (QLD) to cover for the loss. We brought in a huge talent in Tarryn Thomas who has class to burn around the big sticks, and we managed to upgrade our pick 10 to a pick 4. Of course, this pick doesn't guarantee that we pick up home-grown ruck man Campbell in the draft, but it gives us a much better chance. There is always the possibility that the Berry trade could hurt us, but we know the quality of Bowes and what he has to offer.

9/11/2020
The last chance to sign contracts is today. I hate these decisions because you can make an argument to keep all your players, but it just doesn't work that way unfortunately. The arrival of Tarryn might spell the end for Allen Christiensen, while Wooller is a required player after we pulled out of getting Tom Lynch or Aaron Naughton. Joyce and Corey Lyons just aren't up to the level as midfielders yet while Lester, Birchall and Adams are ageing. Marcus being a key defender might earn him another year, but I think we need to prioritise the development of Allison and Cedric Cox. Ah Chee is a handy player but we could possibly get him in the PS or Rookie draft, which is similar for Payne, Madden, Eagles and Skinner. The good thing is we will never be in the position of cutting this many players again, as we had 47 on the list for 2020.

In the end, we have decided the following deals.

Cedric Cox - 2 years
Marcus Adams - 1 year
Jacob Allison - 3 years
Toby Wooller - 2 years

The following players have been delisted. We thank them for their service to the Lions football program, no matter how long their stint. There is still a chance that they may be picked up in the PS or Rookie drafts.

Allen Christiensen
Callum AhChee
Corey Lyons
Grant Birchall
Jack Payne
James Madden
Matt Eagles
Ryan Lester
Sam Skinner
Tom Joyce

This is what I used to track the player performances and development in 2020

2020. NATIONAL / PRE-SEASON / ROOKIE / DRAFTS.
1629354090516.png

16/11/2020.

We take the following picks into the 2020 draft. 4, 65, 83

With pick 4, our plan came into fruition and we drafted Ted Campbell from Morningside, QLD. He is listed as 17 years old, a ruckman, with a body that is ready for AFL, good contested mark and tap work skills. He will need work on his goal kicking and endurance / athleticism.

With pick 65, we weren't able to get Duncan Leadbetter (Suns) but were lucky that Keith Elie from SA slid as far as he did. He is a key defender, 17 years old and has good 1 on 1 defensive skills, loves contact and is a strong tackler. His disposal can be shaky at times, which is probably why we were able to get him. A risk/reward situation we are happy to do in the 4th round.

With pick 83, we have gone for roughie Virgil Crapo, a key forward from Broadbeach, QLD. We don't have much intel on him, as we did not scout him but he is 17 years old and we love drafting local boys into the Lion pride.

All in all after our busy trade week, we knew that it was only really about our first rounder. If Elie and Crapo turn into good players then we will look at them as major steals. We got the man we wanted in Teddy, and will give him the time he needs to become a champion ruck for us.

21/12/2020.

We will have one pick in the pre-season draft and the focus will be on finding a player that can contribute to the senior list in 2021, as opposed to a long-term prospect type player. We consider ourselves as a team in the window, and therefore will do what it takes to 'top up' and be ready for an assault on the premiership.

We took in the 11th pick and were ecstatic to pick up another Queenslander, ex-sun Jacob Dawson. He is a 21 year old midfielder and is ready to play straight away if called upon. He'll have a year to prove himself and potentially earn an extension.

1629355304627.png

We'll use four picks in the rookie draft for 2020, and may consider using them on players that we have had on our list previously and think are worth another look. Conversely there may be some other talent around that we can boost our squad with. It is doubtful that we will go for too many (if any) unknown players, again due to the nature of where we are at as a football club right now.

With our first pick, we retained Corey Lyons, a 22 year old midfielder that we really did want to offer a contract but simply couldn't. He will continue to develop with our midfield group in 2021, to once again try and prove himself as worthy of a longer contract.

With our second pick, we picked up another ex-sun, Jacob Heron. The 21 year old is a forward and has some AFL experience. It is hoped that he can keep the pressure on our forward group, and be good cover in case of injury.

With our third pick, we retained defender Mitchell Hinge who had a great season in our reserves in 2020. He is another that we really wanted to keep on the books, but the contract situation just didn't allow it.

With our final pick in the rookie draft, we went for Zachary Sproule, an ex-giant. The 22 year old is listed as a key forward and will provide good positional depth for us in 2021.

1629355955943.png

Overall, its been a productive draft for us. We've managed to get young and dynamic players that could truly push for selection and longer term deals and some of them already have AFL experience. Now its time for the off-season, where plenty of time will be devoted to the game plan. I believe we have a list that can take us all the way, but with ageing stars I don't think the window is open forever.

2021. Pre Season.
8/2/2021
Well the new season is upon us, and it will be my first full season at the helm. Plenty has happened since I took over at the dawn of the 2020 finals series. We were defeated in an elimination final by the Giants after a terrible first quarter. I am confident that our off-season work has put the list in better shape, despite losing Jarrod Berry. Although his homesickness threw a spanner in the works, it forced us to get clever and end up with two very promising players. Rhys Mathieson will also leave a gap, but it provides more opportunity for players like Starcevich, Bailey, Wooller amongst others. I am hoping that this pre-season we play more than one game, so that I can get a good look at our squad and potential rotations and the game plan in action. We've had some injuries over the off-season, but all have since recovered except for Cam Rayner who is still 2-3 weeks away with a hamstring. I might take a look at blooding some young players too, but I won't be gifting games either.

11/2/2021
I've rolled out the team for our Pre-Season match against the Cats. There are some new faces in there including Jacob Dawson (pre-season draft), Jack Bowes (trade - Suns), Tarryn Thomas (trade - Kangaroos) and Oscar McInerney (2020 rookie) is also pulling on the jumper for the first time. Bowes will start as an attacking winger, Thomas a half forward, McInerney a deep marking forward and Dawson as an inside midfielder. Robertson gets his chance to start in the midfield after being a deputy most of last year. Ced Cox has proved that he was worth a contract and will start as a small defender. Robbo will pinch hit in the forward line or midfield as required, Ellis-Yolmen a defender, Ely Smith in the midfield and Wooller as a rotational key forward. Starcevich and Brock Smith were unlucky to miss, but will get their chance this week. Number 4 pick Teddy Campbell looks a little way off and will spend some time working on his engine.

@The Gabba.

1629366725747.png

13/2/2021
Match day - Gabba.

1st Quarter.
Shocking effort to start the game. Can't get the ball into the forward half, and if we do Tom Stewart cuts it off. Their smalls are super dangerous. Hipwood to CHF and Zorko to the middle. Cats have gone small in their forward line, Harris to CHB.

2nd Quarter.
Got moving in the second term. Charlie kicked two in a row and Harris snuck forward for a long bomb. Narkle causing issues for us in defence but it looks like the wind is having an influence on this contest. Neale and Bowes playing well and Hipwood starting to see more of it. Ely Smith kicked a beauty on the run. Scores basically level at the half.

3rd Quarter.
Another good quarter of footy. On top in possessions and inside 50s and converting more chances. Dawson has three from the midfield so he's impressed me. Robbo playing a good game between mid and forward. Would like to see more from Tarryn, Wooller/McInerney, and McCluggage in the last. Need to finish this one off and should have the wind. Will need to win by about 4 goals to safely progress in the PS tournament.

4th Quarter.
Well we didn't run away with it and were made to earn it but we got there against a good side. Narkle kicked 4 and was a constant thorn in our side - it was hard to find the right match up. Neale and Bowes were awesome and played full game time. Hipwood ended up with three but had more chances. I really liked Robbo's game, he looks like a Mr fix it for me. Harris is a beauty, and I need to sign him up for life. Not sure about Oscar McInerney and Wooller so far, but I don't think I'll play them in the same line up again for a while. Oscar looks like more of a ruckman, but he won't get time in there while Stef is still running out full games and in good form. I'm thinking that I want to use the bench differently to how I have previous. I want the bench players to be more like in the old days where they came on if A) there was an injury B) someone is not performing C) someone is buggered D) the game is over either way. This will mean my best players get good minutes and bench players have to prove themselves to be named on the field. I'm going to try that in our next game, whether that's Round 1 of the home and away, or the next game in pre-season if we advance.

1629415820236.png

18/2/2020

On paper I've made just one change for our second pre-season game which will be against the Eagles. However, my whole coaching philosophy will be altered when we take to the field on the weekend. Interchange will go back to what it used to be: chop outs, draggings, injuries, junk time. I've learnt from previous positions that trying to get equal minutes for each player is a high aim and often creates a skewed idea of form and ability. Subs will not be dropped unless a better player comes back from injury or suspension, or if they play more than 40 minutes and don't show anything. I want to create competition for spots while also keeping my best players on the field. That's what the other sides do, and I am going to take it on board. Wooller will go out of the side and McCarthy comes in. Dawson (MID), McInerney (RUCK/FWD), Ellis-Yolmen (DEF) and McCarthy (FWD) will start on the bench. McCluggage, Robinson and Zorko will all rotate between the wing and half-forward but should play full game time.

1629419820402.png

20/2/2021
Game Day

1st Quarter
Another frustratingly slow start for us. Neale had an early injury we had to sort out but got back in towards the end of the quarter. Darling and Cripps are causing problems and they've got a good midfield. Finished with late goals to get back into the contest.

2nd Quarter
Eagles keeping distance from us despite us pushing. Luke Foley killing it in the middle for them. Deven Robertson hasn't done much for us. Need more from McCluggage, Charlie and Hipwood. Cox has been solid so far.

3rd Quarter
We haven't won a quarter yet. One big one in the last and we can still win, but Eagles are clean and keeping us at arms length. Eric out with concussion. Darling has five and looks unstoppable. Will swing McStay and Adams. Robbo has been quiet. Will throw our best at them early in the quarter to try and unsettle.

4th Quarter
What a frustrating match. I'm pissed off. I don't think that the Eagles are better than us, and I'm disappointed in the start we had. That last quarter was excruciating. We had so much of the ball but just couldn't convert. Then when they had the momentum we just couldn't get the ball back. A few big question markers heading into round 1 now. What is Robinsons role? Does Deven Robertson make the 22? Can I trust Darcy Gardiner? Does Tarryn Thomas need a kick up the arse or time? Is McInerney the right opton? There are also a couple of sure things: Stef Martin is still an All Australian ruckman, Bowes is a great get and we are not a great team without Neale or Eric. Harris will be disappointed in conceding those goals against Jack Darling but he was involved in some good forward thrusts and it wasn't all bad. I didn't mind the McStay swing, but certainly need him to provide more as the CHF during the season.
