Traded Luke Dunstan

I still think he's got a low ceiling relative to others on the list, but the guy's only 21 so would love to be proved wrong.
No team has 22 elite guns; not even premiership teams.

Even if Dunstan's ceiling seems low, when compared to some players we've had in previous teams, it's probably the height of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

And that is pleasing.

What we can't do is say... "oh we have Dunstan, Minchington and Ross we don't need more inside mids "
Not when .. for example Sydney have Hannebury, Heeney, Mitchell, Kennedy, Jack all capable of winning more of the ball than our best.

Done for the season but no 'immediate need for surgery'. Should still get a full pre-season in.

Dunstan, 21, has been assessed by specialists this week, but a decision on whether to operate on the South Australian has yet to be made.

The hard-nosed onballer underwent a shoulder reconstruction at the end of his first season in 2014, but returned for the opening game of 2015 before playing 19 games that year.

“Early stages of Luke is he’s still being assessed, the dislocation went back in quite easily, and he has been assessed by specialists,” said St Kilda GM of Football Performance, Jamie Cox.

“At this stage, there’s no immediate surgery they’ll assess that over the next week. What is clear is he’s year’s over unfortunately.

“But we expect him to rehab strongly there is no reason to suspect he won’t start the year next year.”

As the bus on the 2013 AIS-AFL Academy camp wound around the picturesque Lake Como in northern Italy, St Kilda Recruiting and List Manager, Tony Elshaug, gleaned an important piece of information from an unlikely source.

While the players remained at the AIS high performance training centre in nearby Gavirate, parents, staff and recruiters explored one of Italy’s most idyllic destinations, a halfway home to George Clooney, Madonna and Sir Richard Branson.

It was here where Elshaug sat next to a West Australian umpire at the back of the bus, who provided him with an insight into a player the Saints would draft late in the first round at the back end of the year. That player was Luke Dunstan.

“I was sitting on a bus in Italy going around Lake Como and I happened to be sitting next to the umpire on the trip, who umpired the AIS game at the MCG earlier in the year,” Elshaug told saints.com.au ahead of the National Draft on Friday night.

“And we were sitting there talking about the players in and around the midfield and he said that there was no doubt the whole midfield operated a lot better when Luke was in the centre square.

ST KILDA midfielder Luke Dunstan was back in full training at Linen House Centre on Wednesday after recovering from a shoulder reconstruction.

The hard nut missed the final three matches of 2016 after going under the knife last August. He severely injured the shoulder when he dislocated it in the round 20 clash against Carlton.

Dunstan, 21, was previously restricted to running.

He was involved in centre-bounce practice with his fellow onballers before full match simulation. Some players left the track after that, while Dunstan and others worked on their running.

Dunstan re-signs for 2 years

Thought this was interesting:

“It’s (shoulder) been going really well. I did a similar off-season running program to what Tim Membrey did last year and I feel like I’ve got a really good base under myself now. I’ve been back into full training for the last month now and I feel really good,” he said.

I want to knock this bloke because he looked so good first year

And has regressed a lot since

Hopefully it is just mental protection of his shoulders

And hopefully another injury free preseason and more running will allow him to reach Armitage levels - good b grade inside and outside mid, with occasional a grade games

Luke has been very strong in the vfl over the last few weeks and has been rewarded with promotion back into the AFL side again . Even more than the usual voices called for him to be back in the side again . Is this a sign that more people are respecting him and willing for him to have a longer stay ? We will find out by the feedback on Saturday night after the Swans game .

Dunstan again played great footy to be one of the reasons that we nearly won this game . He has sure turned the corner with his general play and numbers of disposals. It's really what he is doing with his disposals now which is the difference to earlier in the year when he was just throwing the ball on his boot , now he has the confidence to back himself and look for good options . This was the player that encouraged Lenny Hayes to give him his number . I really hope he continues in this mould now as he has made a lot of supporters eat their words .

I must admit I didn't see this form coming as he was in and out of the side for most of the year . But his last few games have been as good as he has ever played for the Saints.

Luke earlier against the Swans
