The Saints have put out a player interview. I reckon this bloke will make it.

Miles in the legs

IT'S NOT unusual for defenders to run around putting out spot-fires, but in Luke Miles’ case it has stronger relevance.

Miles was set for a career as a West Australian firefighter until the Saints took him with their second pick in the rookie draft.

And so his plans changed.

"I had just been accepted as a fireman in WA and I was just about ready to put football on hold and get settled for life," Miles said.

"But the AFL opportunity came up ... a once in a lifetime thing. You’ve got to grab that. I can always go back to my studies or fireman duties at other times."

Miles has been working with the AFLPA and the Melbourne Fire Brigade to set up an apprenticeship and is also looking to finish off his environmental management degree, which he deferred after moving to
Melbourne.

"I wanted to get settled into football for the first six months so I deferred uni. I’ll pick that up in semester two and I’ve only got four units left on my degree anyway," he said.

"I’ve been doing it for three years full-time so I wanted to focus on settling in before I picked it up again."

Miles has given plenty of thought to life outside football, understandable considering his opportunity came at 21.

"When I was 18 I was playing WAFL colts and I think when they were looking at guys for the draft I was sitting around on the sidelines with a back injury," he recalled. "I didn’t get too worried about it.

"My goal was to play in the WAFL and I was quite happy with that. It wasn’t until the end of last year that AFL prospects started to pop up."

Hitting the scales at just 78kg when he was picked, the running defender has now bulked up to 85.

The added mass better equipped him for the demands of AFL football, but his body struggled to carry the extra weight and he spent the first half of the season battling stress fractures in his legs.

"With the extra weight going through my legs, something had to give and unfortunately it was that," he said.

"I’ve just had my second week in the VFL at Casey and I should play a full game this week. It’s a bit hard getting back into the swing of things but hopefully I can build my fitness back up again."

Miles realises he has to bide his time before he gets his chance at senior level, acknowledging there are plenty of teammates ahead of him in the pecking order.

But he has already worn the St Kilda guernsey in a match – the first NAB Cup game against
Richmond this year.

He said the thrill of playing senior football on the big stage was something he yearns to experience again.

"It was good to get there, relax and walk into the middle of the ground and be comfortable with the surroundings," he said.

"I was thrilled just to start on the bench. We got into the rooms and gave the young blokes a run on the ground first.

"It was amazing – such a great experience."

There's a report he's having trouble with his leg again?

Not on injured list but hasn't been playing for Casey?

C'mon Saints - pick up your act with letting the fans know what's going on.

What does the club gain by not telling their fans about players and injuries? Not much. Would other teams care if they did not know the exact injury situation of players like Luke Miles, Raph Clarke and Micheal Gardiner (just a few examples) Not a great deal i would of thought.

I'm excited about Miles. Potential for sure.

I've seen a bit of Miles, looking very very good. Even if he has a screwed leg he's still better than gwilt. Someone get a baseball bat, hit the crap out of Gwilt, put him on long term injury list. Miles in :D

Meh, that's one good game. Still dont rate Gwilt, I'd like to see him used as trade bait. Hopefully play a few more good games to bump his value up a bit. Maybe we can get a second rounder for him and Fiora. Would be nice.

Unless The South Launceston Toothgaps are joining the AFL next year, we ain't gonna be able to trade Fiora to anybody.

Interestingly he is still in rehab :

St Kilda Rookie Luke Miles (pictured above) had some bad luck with injury in 2008 but made sure he had plenty to keep him motivated off the field, consolidating his off-field wins in the off-season as well as getting back to his home in Perth for a break.

Accepted into the WA Fire Brigade for 2008, Luke chose to put that opportunity on hold to see what he could achieve in football but he was keen to learn more about the ‘Firies’ in the meantime.

“I’ve been doing day and night shifts for the past three months, attending various calls including structural and non-structural fires, Emergency Medical Response (EMR) calls such as cardiac arrest incidents, motor vehicle collisions (MVA), fire alarms (FIP’s) and even a cat stuck under a house,” he explains of his arrangement with Chris ‘Dizzy’ Smith at Windsor Fire Station.

Now he’s paving the way for other players to do the same and has used his off-season to develop a proposal to take to the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in the hope that other players can get a taste for what it’s like to be a Fire Fighter.

Luke came back from Perth (where he was catching up with family and friends and continuing his rehab for the stress fracture in his Fibula) a week early to do a work placement with MFB Building and Structure and Dangerous Goods Departments; a feather in his cap which he was keen to complete before Pre-Season training began.

He’s much more settled in Melbourne through his volunteer work with the MFB. “The past three months of work placement with the MFB has not only provided me with an insight into role of a fire fighter … but also broadened my networks outside of football and developed new friendships; it’s great to get your head out of football, particularly if you’re injured.”
