I don't think there's much underlying weakness in either the Chinese or Australian economy, and so far the US housing downturn has had a fairly negligible effect on consumption. The downturn looks as though it has a fair way to run, and if it starts affecting consumption levels in the US, this will drive a world-wide economic slowdown.

If everything continues as it is at the moment, it will most likely be a say month-long period of lower stock prices and high volatility - to be expected after such a tremendous run.
