Does anybody know anything about MEGAN'S progress. Apparently seen to be still limping at BEST & FAIREST. If so, Lonergan or Taylor CHB, or WEST. with HAWKINS/MOONEY key forwards, helped more and more by OTTENS. LONERGAN made his name at CHB(&lost kidney). We did see him star at CHF in RES. gf 2007. Any thoughts?

Pretty much every time someone says they saw Egan limping someone else will say he's been running unhindered.

Yeah ive also heard that he is able to run again & should be right to go by round 1 if all goes to plan, I guess we will just have to see who's right about egan & i personally cant wait to have him back in the team.....:)

I forgot what the guy looks like :D

Hopefully for his sake we see him at his best next yr. Even as an opposition supporter i would hate for him to miss another season through his foot injury when Geelong are in such a strong position.

Must of been painfully hard for him to see the 07 team become premiers without him and to watch all of 08 on the sidelines and see them make another Granny.

lol yeah but i remember he did his foot just before the 2007 gf and they said he should be right to play in the big one so i dont really listen to all that stuff anymore... would be great to have him back though, he can take the number one forward allowing scarlett to run off and be more attacking, so its a win win. i think taylor will be good in a few years but is not there yet.

other thing is you have to remember harry was taken as a mature aged player and isnt that much younger than egan so this gives egan an advantage imo

Egan was taken mature aged as well so there is a 3 year gap which is considerable in footy. Especially when you consider scarlett is 4 years older than egan!

I think they have the spacing right if egan can get back on the park and near his best.

Cats cautious on Egan's future

GEELONG will take a cautious approach with Matthew Egan over the summer as it tries to get its star defender back on the field next season.

The word stemming from Skilled Stadium this week was "hopeful" when Cats football manager Neil Balme spoke of the 25-year-old's battle to overcome a serious foot injury.

Egan hasn't played football at any level since round 22, 2007 when, with his side on the eve of what would be a drought-breaking premiership, he broke the navicular bone in his right foot against the Brisbane Lions.

Setbacks forced the solidly-built backman to firstly be ruled out from the 2007 Grand Final, and then miss the entire 2008 season.

He struggled to do any major training this year, raising questions over both his immediate and long-term future.

When asked about Egan's progress and his potential impact next season, Balme was non-committal but said the Cats were optimistic he could return to be the player he was before his injury.

"Well, he's three or four months further along than he was [mid-year] … we're happy with where he is but he's still got a fair way to go and we're hoping that he'll be fine," Balme told afl.com.au.

When asked whether he believed Egan, named centre-half back in the 2007 All-Australian team, would take much part in the Cats' pre-season, Balme replied: "Oh look, it's still too early to say.

"We're very hopeful but he's still got a fair way to go."

And as for Egan being close to resuming running or a return to training?

"Well, he's closer than he was three months ago … he is progressing through and we're hopeful that he'll be okay."

The Cats should have close to their full list when they start pre-season training later in the year, but Balme said forward Tom Hawkins was again in a moonboot as a result of the foot injury he suffered late in the season.

Geelong expects the burly youngster to overcome his ailment "sooner rather than later", with the boot being more a precautionary measure.

Geez, that article really bothers me.
Nothing positive about his recovery thus far, and all they say is they hope to get Egan back to his best. :thumbsd:

Agreed. That article dosn't sound good at all. My hopes for him ever resuming his AFL career have taken a serious dive since reading that. I think we should all be preparing for that worst case scenario.....and of course preying for otherwise.

he is running and will be ok for pre season. From there on lets just hope he gets some luck rather than bad luck

About Matty Egan, how did this foot injury get so bad, was it from the original injury against Brisbane or did he hurt it again sometime, or did it get worse cause he was trying to get back for Grand Final?

He had surgery to STABILIZE his navicula #, and he had hoped to be able to play 07 GF which was never on, had complications requiring further surgery, and similar to HIRDY'S case, and has had periods of immobilization. He has not had any other injury and must be THE most frustrated player around. He has seen one of Melbourne's top foot surgeons, so it is shocking bad luck.

the simple answere about how egan is going is that the club does not know. The surgen is confident that he will be ready to go rnd 1 next season. However he has so far not done any running and until he starts to run in january the club dosent know where they stand.

The other concern is Hawkins' continues to get foot injuries.

Just to add to this, Hawkins is wearing a moon boot again (as part of precautions) after having the same problem with his foot that sidelined him during last season. If Egan was not bad enough, clearly Hawkins foot never healed and is an ongoing problem with no clear cut solution. They managed Ottens overly cautiously effectively this year, I hope it is the same.

The frustrating thing with Hawkins, is it means that he probably wont do a full pre-season yet again, which he really needs.
