Does McDougall need to improve his kicking in front of goals to get the FF position on a regular basis

His record so far looks ordinary when compared to other forwards who have played at the club so far

McDougall - 44.36

Cumminngs - 158.64
Gehrig - 159.76
Glendenning - 116.72
Heady - 236.164
Ph Matera - 351.201
P Sumich - 514.354
M White - 103.52
T Wilson - 83.58 (Surely he can be better than Troy)

Even Karl Langdon had a better conversion rate - 105 .88

I'm not knocking the Kid by the way, I think he has plenty of talent

Whilst on the subject as a matter of interest

Worst Kick - C Mainwaring - 84.107 (Not exactly a suprise)

Yes, his kicking isn't up to scratch and is one of numerous skills he must improve to become a decent player.

Yeah, agreed, although in his defence he managed an absolutely unnatural number of posters in that 44.36

Personally, like a lot of stuff to do with McDougall I think its more confidence then any problem with ability- one of the weird anomalies is I reckon that he's a lot better from 45-55m than closer in- from that distance he kicks through the ball, unwinds, and is actually a lovely booming kick.

Closer to goals though, he seizes up and tries to steer it through by stabbing at it, and as a result is inaccurate.

Definately confidence more than anything because it is his set shots for goal that generally let him down, I'm confident with his kicking from 50 aswell.

Apart from floating in & out of a match It's the only side of his game that needs improvement. One good preseason & I think he can be up to scratch.

I'd like to know Smith's on goal percentage rate he's usually very accurate.

Be assured that his kicking accuracy will improve greatly this year now that Murray Couper is on board.

i heard murray late last year saying that he was surprised by the (inaccurate) kicking by the squad members.

mcD isn't the only one who gets the yips. *cough*dCox*cough* it's a skill our whole team must work on

Thats great news then

Our kicking accuracy late last year probably cost us a home final

Yes I agree.... How the hell they could have Peter Sumich as the goalkicking coach when he had without doubt the worst goalkicking action ever

One of the most blackly humorous moments of the 2004 season for me was v the kangas, when minutes after missing a fairly easy set shot, McDougall led to the ball, dropped a mark, paddled it in front of him, swung around and snapped a left foot kick across his body to goal from deep in the pocket.
Couldn't help but wonder if someone had been exercising an unhealthy influence on impressionable young doogs. :D

I reckon Sumich has it in him to be a very good senior coach in time, but someone should slap a restraining order on him to keep him away from Doogs when he's doing goal kicking drills.

yes, confidence and a bit of inexperience. Both can be overcome.

I think that if e mastered the art of marking the ball first he would have alot less trouble. its alot easier to kick goals from set shots!!! I know this i play full forward for my local club and missed only 3 set shots this year, however, on the run i missed alot more. If McDougall didn't make such hard work of all the easy marks that he drops inside the forward 50, then this thread would not exhist as there is little wrong with his kicking style from a set shot.

I think Doogie's kicking can improve with experience and just a bit more confidence, which will come if people are prepared to show faith in him... perhaps extend him a just little more leeway.

T Wilson - 83.58 (Surely he can be better than Troy)

OI!!!! :p
Doogs is still young so I reckon his kicking would be easier to rectify.

He misses plenty of set shots too.
