Luke Hodge would be leading Hawthorn's best and fairest at the halfway point

By Jason Phelan 12:00 PM Wed 23 June, 2010

HAWTHORN

Overall mark:
B
Win-loss: 7-6 (WLLLLLLWWWWWW)
Ladder position: 8th
Leading possession winner: Luke Hodge (338)
Leading goalkicker: Lance Franklin (30)

Season so far
A pre-season favourite to be a big improver this year, Hawthorn looked set to deliver on that expectation after comprehensively defeating Melbourne to open the season. A close loss to Geelong the next week then sent the Hawks into a downward spiral that looked to have doomed their season. A nail-biting win over the struggling Tigers snapped that run, but it hardly filled supporters with renewed hope. Alastair Clarkson's men then breathed life into their finals campaign with a stirring six-win rally.

Surprise packet
The Hawks look to have found a gem late in the draft in Ben Stratton. Although not blessed with key defender height, he has the poise and ability to read the play required to punch above his weight. Special mention should be made of the efforts of Carl Peterson, who has carved a niche for himself after being let go by Richmond.

Needs to step up
The two Beaus - Dowler and Muston - were part of the much-vaunted 2005 draft crop that saw the Hawks scoop up five of the first 22 players available, but neither has established himself. Injuries have been a factor for both, but well into their fifth AFL seasons, they are still to crack the 20-game mark. Both must come in for scrutiny at the end of the year if they haven't played some decent footy.

The run home

Round 20 Melbourne at the MCG (H)
Round 21 Fremantle at Aurora Stadium (H)

As quoted by Tom Murphy. Link here:

Luke Hodge said the same thing on After the Game on Saturday night.

Heard he was being used in little bursts in the VFL game against Collingwood, to prevent from over-exerting his hammy I guess. I never thought he'd play against the Dogs, not after such a serious hamstring. He'll be watched closely by the medical staff for next couple of weeks while he tries to get up to speed.

BRAD SEWELL

July 1, 2010
IT WAS in 2002 when Peter Lenton first turned up on my grandmother's doorstep in Ballarat, lost and in a foul mood.
The player manager had arranged the visit to talk about representing me, in the event that I was drafted. But it was really Luke Brennan he had driven up the Western Highway to woo. Brennan, my teammate at the North Ballarat Rebels, was highly rated and tipped by most to go top 10 in that year's national draft.
I, on the other hand, was considered only an outside chance.
He was going to sit down with Luke then see me. But, five minutes before arriving in town, Lenton got a call from Brennan's family saying they had decided to go with another agent.
To add insult to injury, he couldn't find my house. I had to go to my gran's because it was easier for him to locate. Following this comedy of errors, and despite his disappointment at losing Luke, we ended up having a pretty good chat.
