It appears that he understands that he is injury prone and not in Chris Connolly's plans for the future of the team. He is going to play on, but I think if he is fit enough, will spend all his time at Subi.

I know Ringo and the "hockey player" stuffed up giving him such a lucrative contract, but doesn't Metro have any pride?.

Retire while you've still got some credability, rather than being despised by your team mates (although he's not good enough to get a place in the side) and ridiculed by spectators.

I'd rather be remembered as a reasonable player who succumbed to injuries, rather than a person who stayed past his use by date and soaked up money that could have been used to improve the club.

Who says he is despised by the other players?Name names.
Even if he did retire we would still have to pay him out. There is no way out of paying him his due money.
By the hockey player are you refering to Dr Ric?or Hatt?
The guy can not be blamed for getting injured.

If he retires, it is a clean cut and no more money is paid out. Basically the contract is terminated by both parties.

He can't be blamed for his injuries, but do you think it is right for him to know that he will only play for Subi if fit and stay on the Freo list, when he could retire and just play for Subi.

It's all money, but I'd be peeved off having a player on contract who has no chance of playing in the seniors, whilst his place could be taken by someone else who will add something to the player group.

My pride would say retire gracefully before I get ridiculed by the spectators, officials, team mates and the media.

Bit harsh there masai. He couldn't help getting injured and his original contract with Fremantle was warranted since he had several good seasons in the backline at West Coast.

According to the Ten sports story, Metro wants to give the AFL one last crack and will hope that his knee comes up trumps after pre-season training.

Metro and Harding have both been big losers out of the trades that saw them cross town. Both were respectable players at their clubs, but solely due to injury have not been accepted at their new homes.

I hope both of them recover and prove all of us wrong!!

No matter how well he played in the backline at the eagles, he was never worth $290,000 a season. Would you have given him a 4-year million dollar deal to keep him?? No chance...

If Metro retired this afternoon, he would be remembered by Dockers supporters as "a person who stayed past his use by date and soaked up money that could have been used to improve the club".

Maybe he wants to be remembered as a player who gave credible service to his club after overcoming a potentially career-ending injury. Maybe he intends to use the remaining period of his contract to prove that he still has something to offer to Connolly and the club. As for Connolly's future plans, it was only a few weeks ago that there was talk of having to defrost Dale Kickett, so anything's possible.

I'd also be interested to know who out of the Dockers player group "despises" Metro. As for what the spectators think of him, well, he's an ex-Eagle, isn't he? And bagging your own players - isn't that supposed to be something only Eagles supporters did?

There is a difference between bagging a player and abusing him/ calling him names? Of course you have to criticise players that are not helping the side. We aren't calling him a duck, or making constant fun of him are we? We aren't making jokes about him. We are just giving our thoughts on this issue.

It's a shame your fellow supporters aren't being as gracious as you are, Kenny.

I'd rather be called a "duck" than a "fistula", that's for damn sure.

You've got me there, but I was more talking about the BF Dockers supporters :) You know the Dockerland folk are a completely different group of people to the BF group :)

He's hanging around for the cash and everyone knows it. Don't give us this noble 'going out as a battler instead of a leech' story-line.

Connolly would have told him (like Toia) in no uncertain terms, " you are getting another game over my dead body."

Give it away Metro. Do the right thing by the club!

Fair enough, as long as your lot give the "honour" line a rest.

The concept of "loyalty" in the AFL is as flexible as it gets. It's okay for the club to trade you to a club on the other side of the country when it suits their future plans or to nab a "star", but when the shoe's on the other foot you're given a revolver and expected to do the honourable thing?

Why don't you ask Croad to take a pay cut for the good of the club? Or Farmer? They've done stuff all to justify their salaries.

Fair enough also.

At least Croad and Farmer are going to play for Freo again.

Plus Pav, Hase and J Lo all signed for less money then they could have got. Thats because they saw the bigger picture of club over individual (which of course they'll reap the individuals rewards from hopefully).

Kenny, I think you've got us a little bit wrong. We don't take ourselves that seriously...most of the time.

Certainly Mission Man doesn't. That is the beauty of his postings.

Carneagles, keep reading. BTW I love the HunTAA gif.

Yeah I know mate, its all just a bit of harmless fun. Some of the discussions on Dockerland are pretty interesting and I read them from time to time. The reason I don't post there is I prefer posting in message boards such as this one where we get opinions from opposition fans. Just a personal preference.

I totally agree. But I doubt that the Eagles ever paid Metro a quarter of a million per year. The problem that Freo are in now is that their past administration overpaid players on future potential.

Cheers granddad.

For what it's worth, you can't take anything you read on these boards, Dockerland, or the rest of the internet for that matter, too seriously. Now I never went to vet school, but I'm fairly sure that Harding isn't actually a duck.
