Deadly mosquito fleet.

I'm really excited about this being a genuine prospect: having actual goal kickers in the forward line who are no slouches with the pressure either (except for perhaps Duffy).
Just while we're waiting for Tabs and Apeness to come on, is it worth going with this to give us a chance going into the finals?

I would. Crozier and Duffy showed a natural goal sense and contributed 5 goals and a few score involvements as well. I can easily see them playing along side Walters and Ballas with Pav/Fyfe/Clarke/Sandi bringing the ball down.

If they can play like they did last night, I'm all for it.

Throw chopper Mayne down back. Have Pav as the key target with Fyfe/Clarke rotating in

I wrote a post last week that was in jest, but semi serious.

It was one in where I stated we go small against Geelong and purposely go with the chaos ball inside forward 50m. I also stated that if we went long they would intercept every mark.

Pretty much played out exactly like this and we nearly beat them when it turned into a scrap. They can't defend the ground ball inside forward 50m anywhere near as well.

Plus sometimes we need to play with a best 22 in mind not a best structure. If that means we have nippy forwards, so be it.

Yep, the consistency is the key.

It probably isn't totally realistic to have them all play at once this year, given Duffy and Sonny are underdone (or are they?), but it could be managed. And if Nat's shoulder means he plays forward a bit more then we could cobble together a dangerous forward line.

How do we fit them all in? And does that mean Ross has to give up his beloved non damaging defensive forward?

I don't think he does. Not with the way Sonny, Croz and Ballas play. I don't know if we've had them all in the one side before, but I don't think we lose anything with them in together, defensively. Mayne is already being sent back to defence. De boer can rotate through the midfield if Fyfe has to play forward a bit more due to his shoulder.
Fitting them in will be the problem.

FF: Ballantyne, Pavlich, Duffy
HF: Walters, Clarke/Sandilands, Crozier

Looks damaging, unfortunately though Sandilands and Clarke don't take enough Marks

Given we don't have realistic tall options to bring in up forward then I would rather see us create something from an area we are strong in and try to engineer a mismatch that works to our advantage. Speed kills.

Surely Duffy and Walters would work from the SUB role. Rotate other players including Fyfe through HF.
I think that would be it. Send the resting ruck man down back as a loose man. I think both Sandi and Zaarke marked in the defence last night.

It could work, provided who ever delivers the ball into our 50 is smart about it. Like we saw for 3 quarters last night, any semi decent defender will be able to intercept long bombs with ease, but if players like D Pearce can lower their eyes and kick to advantage, we'll be much better off.

We pretty much don't have any other options anyway. Taberner and Apeness are clearly not ready.

Definitely think we should give this a shot. It's an exciting prospect.

Think this is spot on. We don't have a genuine 2nd KPF so play to our strengths. Unfortunately however I can't remember a mosquito fleet doing the job deep into September :(

Thing is Crozier and Fyfe playing forward are both strong marks as well, so you likely wouldn't be losing to much from having Mayne down there.
Rekon Crozier is a better mark than Mayne actually (In the forward half) so kind of where not losing Marking players ...

Adelaide crows in 1997 and 1998 was the best example I can think of. 32 out of 34 goals kicked by players under 188cm :D

Most of them by Darren Jarman.

Fair call but with due respect to our smalls and mid-size forwards, D Jarman was a level above and there was no zone defence in the mid 90s. IMO zones have made a contested marking KPFs more important than ever.

Yeah sure I'm not saying it's a great idea, I've been a big supporter of playing more talls.

Also remember that in 1997 the average AFL player was much shorter. Plenty of KPPs under 190cm like Modra etc. Not many 200cm forwards. Just mentioned the crows because those 1997 and 1998 premiership teams were notable for their lack of any key forwards whatsoever, they relied on their mids and smalls for all of their goals.
