Here are my thoughts on the Swans playing list. With the retirements this year I don't think we have too worry about delisting more than 2 players. These 2 players will more than likely come from the rookie list. So that means there are 7 places to fill (5 senior , 2 rookies). The one thing Sydney needs to get is a tall defender. I don't think there are too many that are worth getting by trade ( none that are out of contract anyway ) , so I expect we will use our early draft pick and maybe a 2nd or 3rd round pick on a tall defender.

I also believe we need a good midfielder. Jason Torney is available and we will have plenty of room in our salary cap with Kel, Dunks and Schwatter going. Torney would be very handy.

Our goal scoring options are the best I have seen for many years , and when our three ruckman are all fit there won't be a problem.

So if the Swans can get a tall defender who is ready to play I think the future is looking good.

So tell me what you think.

I would want another backup ruckman. A couple of ill-timed injuries, and you're stuffed. Ball has been injury prone, as has doyle. I don't think Mott can carry the ruck for a whole year, but he will improve.

A couple of confident half-forwards who can back themselves would be nice.

Keep in mind that we used three draft picks on tall defenders last year (Hunt, Powell and Roberts-Thomson) and our current key defenders (Saddington, Schauble and Brockman) are still pretty young. Also, I'm pretty sure Daffy will have to remain on the list, meaning that there are only four open spots on the list (and two of those were veterans). At least one more player will have to go, possibly two - especially if Bennett is to be promoted.

Onya ROOS

I still believe we need a defender or two, and definetly a midfielder. Also we are all forgetting we have four excellent ruckmen on the list. Goodes plays his best footy on the ball (won rookie of the year as a ruckman ). Doyle is going to be a 200 game player. Can't wait to see what this lad can do when fully fit. Ball has proved how good he is, and he will recover from op. Mott can only improve after a solid dbut season. Brockman could play there as well. I think they will keep all the young fellas on the list. Hate to say it but Daniel McPherson looks a bit shaky. Matthew Nicks may be used as trade bait. Brad Seymour and Rowan Warfe are fairly safe (lack of tall defenders).

Paul Roos must be rubbing his hands together. With a little bit of luck ( which we had F*** all of this year ) and the younger players getting more experiance, the future looks bright.

p.s. Would love to see Amon Buchanan get a real go. Let him loose on the forward line at the feet of Hall and Stevens. I still think the lad could be a star like Steven Milne and Nathan Brown.

Daffy quietly quit the club and returned to Melbourne to run his Restaurants in August didn't he ?

As I understand it, Richmond are still paying his salary and won't let him retire (something to do with the money coming out of their salary cap). While he may not play next year, he will still be taking up a spot on the list.

It's not up to Richmond. If Daffy and Sydney agree he retires he won't be on the list. They just have to delay it so that he retires next year (after contracts expire which actually happens towards the end of this year) so that his final salary payable by Richmond will be included in next year's cap, not this year's. His spot on the list will be available.

Yes, Daffy's spot will be available but after the draft. Not sure about the timing with the pre-season draft which is in December this year.

On the draft, I was checking the AFL site and noticed the rules re: NSW zones. If I read it right, Syd and Bris can nominate a pick prior to the draft from their zone for a 3rd Rd pick (similar father/son rule). Also. can nominate a priority selection from zone between Rds 1 and 2.

Anyone have any clues on players from Rams who might make this worthwhile?

Daffy's spot will come free, at least in time for the pre-season draft and maybe for the national one.

Those draft concessions you are referring to no longer exist, thanks to a fit of hysteria from the Eddie and his mates.

As I understand things, for the money payable to Daffy from Richmond to be included in the player payments for 2003, he would have to occupy a spot on the list until the cutoff for final lists before the national draft, so he is delisted after this and we get a pick in the pre-season draft to fill his position on the list.
