I wouldn't be reading too much into what roles the Hawthorn boys are playing.
Looking at that squad, they are playing about 475 talls.
Don't forget, it was this time last year that Rioli played at halfback and looked the goods. He spent exactly zero minutes there through the season.

back line rookies are usually crap, we aren't going to get a Saad/Oxley this year
Weitering could be great, will play 22 games if he's fit, intercept mark king, ball will be down there enough. (even Hugh Goddard averaged ~60 last year, and Weitering is on another level)

Agreed. For a gun mid no, for a KPD hell yes too pricey.
He will need to make a 80 avg. to be worth it.

Shame about Cunningham. Hopefully gets on opportunity later on in the preseason and performs well.
Will be keeping a close watch on Weitering and Docherty. Hopefully gets a few midfield minutes although can't see him leaving half-back too often.

I would think that not just with Carlton, but most teams entire playing lists, including rookie listed players will play 2 out of the 3 NAB games to ensure that everyone except the guys on the injury list get a run.
