From my perspective next gen 2K14 had the best gameplay of the series. Ive actually had to shelve it because I dont want the possibility of being burned out for 2K15.

From the introduction of MyPlayer and Virtual currency and then MyTeam Ive been concerned that 2K was moving away from simulation basketball to these bastardised, casual, gimmicky, 'My' rubbish. This trailor seems to confirm that. There's more footage of created players than the actual NBA MVP.

Look at the pre-order bonuses. 5000 VC? Piss off. I had to use VC to change my team line up. MyTeam cards? Keep them. Leg sleeve? Now you're taking the piss.

The design of the game is towards these gimmicky modes that monetise the casuals. Sim players who like full control of their associations and who like complete roster association with power to control 30 teams have essentially been told to piss off.

Thankfully the gameplay has to make this transition to gimmicky, casual, NBA Live rubbish. But it cant be long.

And this guy said it better than me.

Man I can see it coming. Following this direction, we will buy a game called MySelf2k20, where you start by creating a 7'10 green mohawk'd version of yourself (probably a 4'11 12years old kid, aka the new target), getting drafted 1st overall in your MyFantasy team in a MyFantasy league full of created myFriends and MyYoutubeStars+Ronnie2k.
Then after creating yourself, you get to sit on your MyCouch and watch true Nba games, wich will probably be replicated by a new Nba videogame franchise

I actually found the last two versions to be disappointing, and it doesn't sound like the trend is being broken.

VC was the worst decision in a sports game. If it was only in myplayer, Id be fine with that, its an RPG mode essentially. But it absolutely killed association mode, which I thought was the best long term mode in a sports game (bar the broken drafts if you didn't download created classes). "MyGM" is pathetic. Until you spend some VC, you literally cant do anything but but sign FAs and let everyone else do their thing. I dont know why sports games can't get the long term game modes right. 2ks association mode main problem used to be that player ratings inflated too much over time, and crushed every cpus team cap, as the draft classes were too loaded. Madden got too watered down, though its draft system is much bettter, though I wish players names and classes were randomized.

I could not change my myGM lineup until I bought this ability with some VC.

If that isnt ominous for the future, then nothing is ominous.

Yeah its pathetic. Got VDN as coach on a 5 year contract? Tough shit spend some VC if you want to fire him and get SVG out of the commentary box. Spent a top 5 pick on a young centre who needs some minutes? Tough shit Mike Brown doesnt play rookies he is warming your bench all year.

My absolute favourite is that some MYGM things you essentially pay for twice. Once to unlock the privelege of being able to buy it, and then to actually but it. Why not charge the full price at once?

I shouldnt have to pay or grind to unlock something so basic in A SPORTS GAME, this is what infuriates me.

Yep all true.

But Take Two's revenues went up 150% on 2K14 based primarily on VC sales.

This business design only works if people buy it. People need to stop buying VC.

Heard so many good things about the NBA 2K franchise from 2K11. Have heard many bad things from long time fans of the franchise, solely because of 'VC.'

It's causing all sorts of problems.

Because it wants to ensure people dont find exploits to get it they make everyone HAVE to be online to access their modes.

Of course, the 2K servers are historically crap. The worst. They barely work for online play, let alone the constant saving, uploading and downloading of previously offline, single player modes.

When everyone picked up their copy over christmas/ new year the servers melted. The game was unplayable for 2 weeks. People couldnt play anything other than quick games.

VC.

Bah. Won't be picking it up then, by the sounds of it.

I ignored 2K14 until a few weeks ago when I picked it up cheap on PS3. Only play online, so I've avoided the VC rubbish.

Sadly, I'll have to avoid NBA 2K until they stop with this crap. When you pay a substantial amount for a video game, you shouldn't have to spend more just to access the games features.

Their association mode has also gone to shit anyway. There hasn't been any move towards making it into a very deep mode that many will enjoy playing without it being filled with glitches, dumb trades and stupidity in general after a few seasons. They promised stuff like that a few years ago but it appears TakeTwo and the NBA2K team are clearly focused on the $$$ after letting all the success get to their head.

I'd play Second Life if I wanted a life simulator. Sure make my player have some cut scenes, and a bit of story but ultimately it should be your performances that are of the most importance.

We can blame NBA Live too. Many people grew increasingly worried after that series fell to pieces a few years ago, and it looks like 2K has basically become the dictator of basketball games. What other choice do we have?

Id probably convert back to NBA LIVE but that is just bloody atrocious. So I'll stick with 2k, however I'm far from happy with the last couple of NBA games they've dished up, like everyone here, VC has killed it, worst move ever!

If NBA LIVE had 2k's gameplay I'd be all over it.

Disappointed at the title change.

I won't buy another 2K until they get rid of VC which is highly unlikely, I lost thousands of VC because the servers ****ed up when I was making a purchase, ****ing shit company.

Hopefully EA gets their shit together... also highly unlikely.

2K has really fallen in love with smelling its own crap.

It's social media presence is nauseating.

And yeah Live is not there to provide a reliable alternative.

I remember I used to be a Live player until about 2004. I got sick of the arcade style so I gave 2K4 a go. Its emphasis on sim hooked me in. Once that gameplay goes, I am gone again.

I was on live all the way until the last one, live10, then I had no choice but to pick up 2k11 and that still stands as the best basketball game ever IMO.

Now 2K is going backwards with this VC shit, gameplay wise it's still awesome.

EA are f*****, I don't think we'll ever see another decent NBA game from them.

Im looking forward to what NBA Live 15 brings this year, no doubt it will probably still be a shocking game but there is a few things I have always liked on the NBA Live games (crowd sounds are better than 2k, better net/hoop sounds/animations), plus I feel the 2k gameplay is getting pretty old. plus of course this VC crap and MyGM lol

Just look at this flog's Twitter feed for ****'s sake. 3 years ago, all he could tweet about was making the most realistic basketball game possible. Now his Twitter is filled, retweeting five year olds whose parents are pre-ordering the game for them.

Yep, definitely after heaps of money off Mummy and Daddy's credit card.

He is a spanner.

All he focuses on is stuff peripheral to the actual on court product. Diamond Duncans and Ruby Iguodalas and all this other rubbish.

He tweets about the game trending or how many pre-orders.

2K loves the smell of its own sh*t. It's pathetic.

And this shifter is the public face of the game.

I just hope the overwhelming sense of disgust, frustration and anger of EVERYONE during this time hasn't/wont be forgotten.
That was just a joke. Ive rarely touched the game since

It peaked at 2K11. The introduction of Jordan, the deep single player and Association modes... it was awesome for both a casual and hardcore fan. Then 2K saw how EA was raking in the $$ with their Ultimate Team modes and wanted a slice of that pie. Enter "MyTeam", "Virtual Currency"... in five, ten years time I wouldn't be surprised if the game itself was free to buy, but everything inside it had to be bought. A bit like iOS games.

2K really are no better than EA now.
