Hi guys and girls

I am a South African visiting your board for the first time and would like to get your take on something.

An Aussie mate of mine reckons that the selection of Haddin for todays ODI vs Zim was a case of typical NSW bias as there are better keepers about.

Is provincialism a problem in Aussie cricket??

No, because Brad Haddin is the 2nd best keeper-batsmen in Australia.

Look at all the other players who have played for Australia recently, who had players around who deserved a shot more than them:
Scott Muller - dud
Matthew Nicholson - dud
Brad Hogg - dud
Shaun Young - dud
Thats just the players i can think of the top of my head.
Now look at the players who got a shot from NSW who had only played a handful of games.
Brett Lee - superstar
Michael Slater - superstar
Glenn McGrath - superstar
Steve Waugh - superstar
Simon Cook - fair enough, dud
Brad Haddin - to early to tell

Those are the ones of the top of my head. Most of the players the pick at an early stage from NSW turn out to be very good cricketers.

Bit harsh on Shaun Young calling him a dud. Ok in his limited stint at international level he didn't really get a chance to do much BUT over the last 10 years he has been a very reliable performer for Tassie with both bat and ball.
Can bat anywhere in the top or middle order and can bowl as an opening or change bowler.
Perhaps he isn't up to international standard, but calling him a dud denigrates his achievements as a fine cricketer for Tasmania.

Nathan Bracken -DUD
Shane Lee - Fat DUD.

Michael Slater aint that good, not in international cricket anyway. I think Symonds should get a spot as an opening batsmen in tests instead of Slater.

I was put on this Earth to complete a certain number of tasks. I am so far behind I will never die...

I would hardly call Shane Lee or Nathan Bracken duds. Shane Lee has taken 1 wicket per one-dayer hes played and conceded little runs. Nathan Bracken is way to early to tell.
Gavin Robertson and Mark Higgs were duds, especially Higgs.

Visro, how can you say Michael Slater is not a top class batsmen. Thats a poor comment. He is considered by many people, myself included, to be in the best 5 openers the country has ever seen. And to Say Symonds should be opening in front of him is even worse. Symonds isn't even an opening batsmen in first class cricket.

I have a lot of respect for you (mainly because your an eagles fan) but that comment was still pretty ordinary.

I would have had Wade Seccombe (Queensland) as the second best keeper going around (after Gichrist) at them moment. Berry (Victoria) is also very a good keeper but probably wouldn't be able to bat to the same standard of Healy or Gilchrist. He is also getting a bit long in the tooth to be blooded into the national side.

Haddin may have gotten the nod over Seccombe due to his superior batting - maybe the selectors are after a batsmen who keeps rather than the other way around.

There has long been the perception that NSW players do enjoy a better run from selectors; that players from other states have to work that much harder to get selected.

I would have taken Seccombe in this case.

This is a hallucination and these faces are in a dream. A computer generated environment; a fantasy island you can do anything and not have to face the consequences.

Haddin deserves his spot and hopefully will get more opportunites if they continue to have a rotation policy. Shane Lee and Nathan Bracken, however, are duds.

The problem with this whole line on NSW bias is that if it was true Shane Warne's career would be over. MacGill has proven himself the superior bowler over the last couple of years but the fat blond has retained his position.

I think that's precisely what they're after. Not too logical to select a player who is a 10% better wicketkeeper (in a role where there is not that much scope for difference between the top players), ahead of a player who is a sound keeper but bats twice as well and averages probably 15-20 runs more.

Perceived bias or not what matters is that we are on top and very successful in the process. We currently hold the world record for test match wins and are doing very well in the one day matches also. I believe the selectors who are made up from all parts of Australia are doing a very good job indeed...Oh and by the way I am a pround Victorian too.
