odom rejects laker offer

Lamar Odom enjoyed his first NBA championship with Lakers teammates Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol this past June, but the free agent might not be back in Los Angeles next season.

The Lakers withdrew their offer to the forward late Tuesday, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.

"Yes, we have taken the deal off the table," Lakers spokesman John Black told the newspaper Tuesday. "Talks have broken down for the time being."

The talks, however, could continue at another time.

"That's within the realm of possibility," Black added.

Lakers owner Jerry Buss, in particular, has been upset by the fact that Odom and his agent, Jeff Schwartz, haven't reached out to the organization, which offered the Lakers' sixth man $9 million per season for three years, the Times said. Schwartz, instead, is interested in a deal that would give the veteran forward a total of $50 million over five years.

The newspaper also reported that Buss is displeased that Odom and Schwartz have had discussions with the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat — but not the Lakers.

While the Heat and Mavericks can give Odom the mid-level exception of $5.8 million per season, they can give him a five-year deal — which would be worth up to $34 million, the Times reported.

I don't see how we can get him either. He screws up our plans for 2010, not to mention we're offering him a lower deal, on a much worse team. Plus, everything at this stage would be devoted to Boozer.

If you sign Odom why exactly would you need a plan for '10?? You'd have Wade, Beasley and Odom going into the '11 season along with whatever good rookies you get, a MLE player and anyone else you get via trade. Pretty solid starting 3.

Wade, Beasley and Bosh/Amare is better than Wade, Beasley and Odom.

If we sign Odom then great, we'd still have some cap space for a decent FA (would have to be a centre) but not of the talent of Bosh or Amare. Bosh and Wade have the same agent and as I understand it, we're his number 1 preference (no link, just my understanding/opinion).

FWIW I'm not entirely sure Beasley will be a Heat player for much longer, I hope he is but I honestly think he'll get moved.

They still have JON on the books though.

Chalmers
Wade
Odom
Boozer
JON
--------
Beasley

Could work.

I still don't think that team wins a championship. We couldn't handle Dwight or LeBron.

I'm with MDC here, although ideally you'd have Beasley playing the 3. If we get Odom and Boozer, unless we get a FA like Tyson Chandler, we wont be winning a championship any time soon.

Yeah I dont think it wins a championship either, but it would be enough to get Wade to re-sign - and I think thats the main goal for Miami. Their frontcourt doesnt play enough defense to go deep into the playoffs.

Odom wants a five year deal with the Lakers, the money isn't as important. I'd expect the Lakers to match Miami's deal (at least) sometime next week and Odom to remain in LA.

Kobe will demand it.

Yeh especially with Beasley at the 4. I expect Haslem will be part of a Boozer trade, but Boozer is hardly a brilliant defender.

I think it's widely considered that Wade's rookie season, where he was with Rafer, Caron Butler and Odom was by far the best to watch and perhaps even more relevant as Caron trades have been discussed.

I'd love Odom to be a Heat player, but re-signing with the Lakers seems like the most logical and likely outcome.
