Organ Donors

Just wondering, what with all the hoopla involving KP and Hookesy's widow surrounding Organ donation, if anyone else out there is either a donour or has been a recipient?

I joined up on the organ donation roster four years ago whilst I was at Westfield of all places. I was buying a pair of jeans and walked past a youngish couple and their baby daughter sitting at a desk. I stopped and made eye contact with the Mum and she immediately said "Go on, you know you want to!" She was right. I had been meaning to do it for a few years so I asked them a few questions and joined up. It made me feel great.
Their daughter had received a kidney transplant a year earlier and it saved her life. They even showed me the scar on the poor thing. Nasty.
Went home and told my parents what I had done and they told me straight up that if I died they'd donate my organs even if I wasn't on the register. I was glad to hear that. :)

me along with my entire family are on the register. Probably the easiest decision we've ever made. Why let them go to waste when they could be saving lives?

i'd prefer an opt out system, and do away with this ridiculous testing of pig organs.

but what i'd really like is for people to simply be asked what their choice is. in an opt-in or opt-out system, it is implied that you made a decision when you didn't.

how about when someone gets their licence or gets it renewed that they have to tick YES or NO to becoming a donor. That way, there is no implied opt-in or opt-out system, people will be making an active choice.

Isn't that already the case? There's a tick under "potential organ donor" on the front of my license (renewed 12/2000).

Doubt anyone'll want 'em once they've had a look what I've got. :D

That has since changed. No mention of it on current licences.

Organ donours?

Did you mean organ donors, or maybe even organ doner (kebabs)?

I tired to edit the thread just after I posted. Thanks for picking up on it and telling everyone. Appreciate it.
Glad to see you actually posted about the topic later.
Cheers

no probs. i'm amazed looking back at some of my posts to see my own spelling mistakes. it's the nature of newsgroups / bulletin boards. like sometimes instead of George W Bush or John Howard, I've accidentally typed c*nt.

what's the relationship between a car licence and organ donation? why don't they ask if you want to donate organs every time you board a flight? or when you purchase macca's?

With the ticks on the car license wasn't it still up to the family anyway in the event that someone died with that box ticked?

I don't think I'd want anyone's organs if they've had maccas.
Yuck.
Strange thing though, apperantly it's been documeted that some people who have received organs from a dearly departed donor start to crave foods that the donor liked. Sometimes even memories. Very creepy but kinda cool.

I'm a donor, but a bit worried that when the paramedics find out, they may not do everything humanly possible to save my life, knowing that my organs could save 4 other people.

Because most people always have there licence on them so the hospital would know strait away if i wanted to share them or not. I say they bring it back, it was so much easier.

bcos its your main ID and if you have it with you when you're dead (which u most likely will), and they see it they will be able to try and preserve you or whatever they do. cos i think they have 2 get your organs out, and into someone else in a matter of hours.

good (obvious) points guys. silly me always related the fact that it's on your licence to you having a car accident as opposed to just any ol accident.

I've just joined the Australian Organ Register, and the main ID they required was my Medicare Card No - nothing about my license was mentioned, which makes sense, as not everyone has a license, but we all have a Medicare card.

I bought my dad an electronic keyboard, does that make me an organ donor?;) :D :D

But, to be serious now, my organs are of no use to me once I'm dead. If someone else can find a use for them, they're welcome to them.

I'm an organ donor
I can't really comprehend why people don't donate their organs... IMO people who don't plan to donate their organs shouldn't receive organs...

so you are more than happy to receive organs?

I'll have to eventually (lungs), but I'm not happy about it. Not because of the obvious issue that many think of when this topic is discussed - ie receiving the tissue of a deceased person - but because of the medical factors you have to consider.

There's rejection and other things to worry about, and you have to take strong drugs which lower your immune system for the rest of your life (to reduce the risk of rejection) - making you more susceptible to infections, viruses and cancers.

Many people have this image of organ transplantation as just 'bad organ(s) out, good organ(s) in' and you're fixed. In reality you're just exchanging one lot of serious medical issues/worries for another set.
